Calypso Studios – Review & Giveaway

calypsologo130h2 is a fun trendy site that includes beautiful jewelry, and reusable shopping totes.

A little bit about the company per their website:

“Calypso Studios debuted in January 2007 with a line of jewelry and accessories created from the earth’s natural elements: clay, shell and glass. The new line was immediately embraced and praised for the unique designs and mediums. The designs are on-trend and span the ages in both technique and the persons choosing these distinctive and exclusive designs. More than a conversation piece, Calypso Studios jewelry symbolizes good taste for an independent spirit. It is our hope that this art will bring much pleasure to who wear it. Calypso Studios jewelry indeed serves to commemorate life’s happy moments.”

I received three different products from Calypso Studios.  A tote bag, ring, and necklace.

The Shopping Tote

Pros: I got this in fresh design by Emma Hand.  Reusable shopping totes  seem to be getting more and more popular as everyone decides to be more eco conscious.  I already have 2 other shopping totes and this one is a great addition.   It measures a generous 17″ x 19″  and comes with a carrying case bagsthat is 8″ x 6″.  I usually only have one reusable tote with me which never holds enough, so it’s nice that you can carry the case with you that can hold 3 totes.    It will hold up to 20 lbs which is the same as 4 gallons of  milk!  That’s quite a bit.  It’s made of a polyester which has a slick feel.  This is awesome because you can wipe it down if it gets dirty or throw it in the washer.  A lot of other reusable totes you have to put in the washing machine.  It has held up really well, and I really like all of the designs that Calypso has to offer, plus there are so many designs to choose from.

Cons: The shop totes only come in a 3 pack.  While it’s nice to have many totes, it means that shoppers who only want one don’t have that option.  I also don’t think that the price is as competitive as it could be.  At $20 for a 3 pack, it may be a bit of a turn off for buyers who haven’t used the totes to really see the quality of them.  At first I wasn’t sure how it would hold up either becaue the material is quite thin.  Don’t be deceived, these totes really pack a punch!

Calypso Rings

Pros: I received this adorable Hope Ring.  This ring puts a bit of a spin on hope-ringother rings because it is elastisized, making it a one size fits all.  No more guessing on your ring size.  It has silver metal plated beads and measure 1″ diameter.  There are many other rings with inspirational sayings, as well as other cute elastisized rings.  Calypso jewelry is actually priced really well.  This particular ring is only $10 which is an awesome price!

Cons:  I thought this would be a cute ring to wear on my thumb.  My thumb fits around a size 8 1/2 ring, and I found this was a bit tight and left a bit of an indentation.  It was something that I got used to.  I tried it on my other fingers and didn’t really have the problem.

Calypso Bracelets

Pros:   Last, but certainly not least was the cute bracelet.  I actually couldn’t braceletfind the exact braclet on their website, but it is teal clay beads and is absolutely adorable.  It’s somewhat similar to the crabby bracelet pictured to the right.  It’s 3 ” in diameter and has an elastic center. The clay bracelets are handcrafted using kaolin clay.  Not only are they pretty, but the elastic is very durable.  As a mom, my kids love to take of my jewelry and play with it.  It’s done well outstanding a 3 year old and a 16 month old.  It’s also well priced at just $7.00

Cons: I really am loving this bracelet and can’t find anything I dislike about it!

The Bottom Line:  Calypso Studios has durable shopping totes and beautiful, competitively priced jewelry.  They also have key chains, earrings, and necklaces.  A really great selection.

Price: $6-$25, depending on the product

There was a concern that the S.H.O.P totes were expensive. I decided to compare their prices with other “comparable” ones available on the internet. While the S.H.O.P. totes are 3 for $20, The Sak (tote with a picture or saying on it) totes were $19 each and the Ecobags were 14.99 for the first one and 12.99 for each additional one. So I think that the beautiful S.H.O.P. totes have it over the competitors in beauty and price.

Stylish multi-strand bracelet adds a sophisticated shimmer to your favorite fashions; subtle enough for daytime, yet oh-so-elegant with eveningwear! Conch shells with bead accents. 7″ long.

Wonder how Calypso Studios got its name. Here was the answer given on surfexpo.com
How did you choose your name and what does it convey?
Calypso Studios Inc. came from wanting to commemorate life’s happiest moments by taking you back to a great time in life, a place you’ve visited, a place you’ve wanted to visit…or maybe a time and a place you wish you were! Thoughts of palm trees, the shining sun, cool breezes, surfboards, and happy, relaxed times are where we get a lot of our inspiration.

The description for the clay beads is that they are made of kaolin clay. I figured that was good but I had no idea of what that meant until I found the following blurb “Clay is very fine, earthy material which can be molded when wet and retains its form when dry. Calypso’s choice is a clay known as Kaolin which when heated becomes a pure white color. Kaolin takes its name from a hill in China. The beauty and interpretive value of the Calypso Studios clay beads is focused on nature and earthy beauty. “

As I was looking at the beautiful April Cornell jewelry collection, I wanted to find out more about the person behind the collection. What a fascinating lady. That ability to “give something back” is one of the driving forces behind April’s work. “I find it so rewarding. The different people I’ve met around the world have influenced my whole perspective on how important giving back truly is. It’s a privilege to be involved in local, national or international projects and see the change that can occur in children, women, men and communities.” She talks about getting ideas for some of her work from nature. She is also influenced by much that she saw in India and started a company there. She is a true artist and not only works in jewelry but also textiles and other items.

I can’t believe how inexpensive the jewelry on the Calypso site is considering all that is done to create each piece. Here is a direction I found in an article on the clay jewelry on this site:
    Calypso Studios Jewelry
When it comes to quality, the Calypso Studios Jewelry Line is a line of jewelry you will be proud to own. Crafted from the finest kaolin clay, each bead receives individual attention in the selection of its Pantone color, the dying of the clay, the rendering of the clay into “canes”, and the hand rolling of each piece to the specifications of the artist’s original design. After kiln firing, each bead is hand strung, completing an intensive, totally handmade process that ensures a unique, appealing finished product. Distinctive, high quality costume jewelry at affordable prices!

I really appreciate the artists who create this jewelry.

In looking up info on Robin Roderick (Calypso tote designs: Trend, Safari)Robin finds inspiration wherever she goes– tiny water drops beaded up on a leaf, the twilight colors of purple and orange in a cityscape, hand painted Mexican pottery or even a lively conversation with a friend.

Robin works in her home studio in Dallas, Texas with her loyal assistant, Maya Matisse, a tiger Siamese, often found napping in the sun. Styles that come easily to Robin range from painterly to whimsical to hand crafted collages. “I love the feel of the paint brush – the flow of creative energy is almost Zen-like for me. Hours can go by without even knowing it,” she says.

Robin is always willing to develop new images and create collections for specific projects. She truly enjoys the product development process. An obvious passion for her craft, a positive, bright disposition and a keen sense of color and design are all reflected in Robin’s work, making it highly appealing for a large range of products.

A Canadian plastics company sponsored a study (using 25 samples) swabbing them for any , Dr. Richard Summerbell, Director of Research at Toronto-based Sporometrics and former Chief of Medical Mycology for the Ontario Ministry of Health (1991-2000), who evaluated the study results said, “The main risk is food poisoning. But other significant risks include skin infections such as bacterial boils, allergic reactions, triggering of asthma attacks, and ear infections.” (If you are interested in the whole article, you can go here (http://barfblog.foodsafety.ksu.edu/2009/05/articles/wacky-and-strange-but-true/are-reusable-bags-really-a-food-safety-concern/)

I love the idea of using reuseable totes but I have taken the time to read a couple of posts from ones who don’t. Here was one persons reasoning: “How can you wash them? Then your not being “Green”. Your increasing your “carbon footprint” by using electricity to wash and maybe dry the bag. You have to use water to wash them which must be conserved. You also use detergents which could have phosphates in them. Your killing the environment!

    So how are they “eco-friendly”?

Looking at the shop totes, they would not take much room in a washer and I assume would simply be thrown in with other things in a normal load. So I don’t see how the above comment would be true.

In an earlier post, I suggested that the S.H.O.P totes be given to celebrities, etc…..In reading more about the founders of the company, I found that they already have. Here is an excerpt from a newspaper report. After showing the totes at a gift-industry trade show in Los Angeles recently, the couple was asked by “Secret Room Events,” a celebrity-gifting company, to take part in the Oscar festivities.

The Lawrences said yes, and soon enough the trip became a family affair, with Lausten and the women’s parents, Deal and Jane Flowers of Richmond, taking part.

All of them worked in a vendors’ lounge on Friday and Saturday at a posh Beverly Hills hotel on Oscar weekend, giving away totes and pieces from the company’s jewelry line to folks including “Breakfast Club” star Judd Nelson, former Chicago Bear Willie Gault, as well as film and TV personality Tila Tequila. Among some 200 other celebrities were members of the show “Orange County Housewives,” the cast of “Camp Rock” and even “American Gladiators.”

Aside from representing the company, Lausten, who has taught at Hartwood Elementary for 19 years, had another mission.

“I found a way to get my students involved,” she said.

The class studied environmental topics all year, even creating a bird sanctuary as a class project. Before the trip, Lausten said she and the class talked about what they wanted to say about the environment to the trend-setting celebrities she would have access to.

    Isn’t this cool?

When we use a S.H.O.P tote and someone comments on it, we could tell them that it is a S.H.O.P tote and explain that the letters stand for Start Helping Our Planet!

I wanted to know more about how hand blown glass beads were made…it is quite a process but oh how pretty they are as evidenced by the jewelry on the site. Here are instructions I found on how glass beads are made:
1Coat the glass rod with a release compound before firing with heat.

Step 2Turn on the torch and set on the highest heat setting.

Step 3Heat the mandrel rod until a color change is visible.

Step 4Select a glass rod, and heat until a molten ball is visible.

Step 5Drop molten ball onto the end of the blowing tube.

Step 6Blow through the tube while rotating.

Step 7Rotate the blowing tube over heat. Stop rotating after reaching the desired bead size.

Step 8Fill the bead round with the melting glass.

Step 9Allow glass beads to cool inside the round overnight.

Step 10Release the glass bead from the bead round gently. Pry the bead from the round with a dull knife if necessary. Repeat the process for each bead.
That is a lot of work! Then people making jewelry can buy the beads from the bead makers.

Over a lifetime, use of reuseable bags by just one person would save over 22,000 plastic bags. We could each be that one person.

Here was another “shocker” for me. It takes 12 million barrels of oil to produce the amount of plastic bags the US uses per year. I had not made any connection between plastic bags and oil. Obviously we could better use our oil for other purposes. S.H.O.P totes are looking really important at this point.

According to the Wall Street Journal, only 1 % of plastic bags are recycled worldwide, the rest are left in landfills. Wow! we need a global effort here for reuseable bags…are S.H.O.P totes available in other countries also?

We have been taking all plastic bags that we do get back to a recycling bin outside our grocery store. I just came across this ” the cost to recycle plastic bags outweighs their value and that most recycling facilities will not take them, leading more and more to just be thrown out with the rest of the trash.” I certainly didn’t know that and had not been so concerned when we didn’t have a reuseable bag with us because I thought it was fine since I was recycling the plastic bags anyway. My little web search has really shown me a lot.

We keep our cheap reuseable bags in our car. It is estimated that 53 per cent of plastic shopping bags are distributed into circulation via supermarkets and grocery stores. If all of us just start by taking our reuseable totes to the grocery store, we could make a big impact.

Here was a startling statistic for me “Plastic bags take up to 1000 years to decompose (plastic bags don’t biodegrade, they photodegrade–breaking down into smaller and smaller toxic bits contaminating the soil and waterways.) I wasn’t aware of this, so I thought I would share some of the things I found out when I did some research into this. It really is important for us to change from plastic to reuseable bags (totes).

We have “clean up our beaches” times here in Florida. Plastic bags are among the 12 items most often found in coastal clean ups. Maybe we need more pictures and articles in our newspapers and tv to help to make the public more aware of the need to use the reusable bags and avoid the plastic altogether.

I live in Florida and I know we bear a great responsibility to use reuseable shopping bags rather than plastic. Hundreds of thousands of sea turtles, whales and other marine mammals die every year from eating discarded plastic bags mistaken for food.

Here is another statement that has me thinking about getting a set of “good” reuseable bags like the S.H.O.P totes:
An average person will use over 350 bags in a single year! According to the Wall Street Journal, the U.S. goes through 100 billion plastic bags annually. What an impact that would be made by each of us purchasing and using something like the S.H.O.P. totes!

I have not yet bought these bags because I didn’t want to spend the money but I found the following statement that changes my mind:
“A high quality reuseable bag eliminates 100′s of cheap reuseable bags and 1000′s of paper and plastic bags over its lifetime” Wow! We have a couple of cheap reuseable which is better than nothing but I think we need to upgrade to a bag that will last longer.

to Erika Elizabeth Meyer – it was hard at first but as soon as I unload I hang them on the front door or put them under my purse to take out to the car… it takes a bit of practice but it works. What I hate is places like WM who say you have to use their bag or they are told to use reg bags and I have pulled up my cart and rebagged right at cs and handed the plastic bags to the manager and told him hey bud I thought you folks were green
