Ear Doc – Review & Giveaway (closed)

Submitted by admin on June 25, 2009 – 11:20 am212 Comments

eardoc-logo-b1Ear infections are no stranger in our home. In fact, Rowan has had 7 in the last 8 months. Luckily we have been ear infection free for the past month, but at the first of the week, Rowan started getting a cold and has been tugging on his ears. That’s my #1 sign that he is getting or has an ear infection. I recently was able to try a product that helps immensely with ear infections, the Ear Doc.   What is the Ear Doc?
As taken from their website:

About 75% of children up to age four suffer from earache caused by the accumulation of liquids and air in the middle ear, divers and air travelers also suffer from the same problem. The EARDOC is an efficient non-invasive device that reduces the ear pain by treating the problem rather than the symptom. The eardoc significantly reduces the need for ear tube surgery (Myringotomy) by naturally opening the closed Ear tube and drying the trapped fluids.

Pros:  This is actually a very neat idea. The ear doc is formed to fit around the shape of the ear. You put it up to your ear and then turn it on using the speed regulater which allows the ear doc to vibrate. It has a speed regulator switch goes up and down, thus giving you low and high settings. It’s really easy to operate.
The ear doc sends vibratons through the ear, thus relieving middle ear pressure and helpsEar Docdrain trapped fluids. I used this on Rowan and noticed that it seemed to provide him relief. It’s nice to have immediate relief when we haven’t been into the dr. yet, and pain medications can take a half hour to kick in. Plus I like that it’s a natural way of relieving pain.
The ear doc relieves pain for many different issues including:

  • Ear infection
  • Middle ear fluid
  • Otitis Media
  • Hearing Loss
  • Eustachian Tube Dysfunction
  • Ear Pain caused by air travel
  • Ear fullness caused by colds, sinusitis or allergies

It takes 2 AA batteries and lasts a long time if you are using alkaline batteries. The ear doc is also compact enough to throw in the diaper bag and wipes clean with a damp cloth.

Cons:  My husband has had a lot of pressure in his ear due to wax buildup. He eventually had to go to the dr. to get it removed, but we thought we would try the Ear Doc on him to see if it would help relieve pressure. It didn’t really help, but it’s understandable since it wasn’t an ear infection, and didn’t involve fluids in his ears. I just thought I would throw this out there in case any of you are wondering if it works with other ear problems other than those mentioned above.

The Bottom Line: Innovative product which helps relieve inner ear pressure and fluid.

Price: $55

The greatest risk factor for Otitis Media is Eustachian Tube blockage due to an upper respiratory illness such as common cold, flu, throat or sinus infection.

What causes a middle ear infection?

A small tube connects your ear to your throat. A cold can cause this tube to swell. When the tube swells enough to become blocked, it can trap fluid inside your ear. This makes it a perfect place for germs to grow and cause an infection.

Ear infections happen mostly to young children because their tubes are smaller and get blocked more easily.

Interesting – I always thought that ear infections were caused by getting ‘junk’ in your ear. I’d love to have this for next time my little one gets sick, be nice to at least try something before taking him to the Dr.

How can someone tell if a child has otitis media?
Otitis media is often difficult to detect because most children affected by this disorder do not yet have sufficient speech and language skills to tell someone what is bothering them. Common signs to look for are

    unusual irritability
    difficulty sleeping
tugging or pulling at one or both ears
    fever
    fluid draining from the ear
    loss of balance
unresponsiveness to quiet sounds or other signs of hearing difficulty such as sitting too close to the television or being inattentive

The accumulations of the fluids can be detected with a audiometer that can be found in an audiology institute.

What causes an earache: Most common ear infections are caused by the narrowing and obstruction of the channel (Eustachian tube) which connects the middle ear with the mouth. The incarcerated fluids and air
create pressure on the tympanic membrane resulting in a severe earache and possible hearing impairment.

This is one of the FAQs: Can EARDOC™ be used if I am already on medication?
The answer was yes, but you should always check with your Dr.

The best question would have to be “How can someone tell if a child has otitis media?” It’s hard when the little one cannot tell you what is wrong.
