Exergen Temporal Thermometer – Review & Giveaway (closed)

exergenIt’s no fun to be sick, that’s a given. But when you or your child are sick, it’s nice to have products that are quick, easy and efficient. Exergen does this with their temporal thermometer.

Pros: We’ve gone through quite a few thermometers in our home. We first had the cheap thermometerpicture-27 we got from the hospital. While it works, it takes forever, and what infant or child is willing to sit still long enough for a thermometer that takes a minute. I even get impatient when I take my own temperature this way. Then we got a cheaper ear thermometer. It wasn’t always accurate and ended up breaking on us a few days after I got it. Needless to say, I took that back. Our last thermometer we had was one that took a temperature in 8 seconds. It was nice, but I found myself taking rectal temperatures on my boys because it was the most accurate. They aren’t fun for your kids and it’s a process.
I’ve been eyeing the Exergen Temporal Thermometer for quite some time. I really like how it works – you simply start in the middle of the forehead and sweep it across to the temporal artery, and you have a temp! It is actually shown to be more accurate than ear thermometers which I was surprised by.  It takes a 9V battery which is included and easily replaceable as well.
Something that I wanted to point out is that this is a flexible spending item. So if you have some money in your flexible spending account, this would be a good investment!

As taken from Exergen’s website, here it a little more on how it works:
As you gently stroke the thermometer across the forehead crossing over the temporal artery, the sensor in its probe performs two processes:
First it scans like a video camera, capturing naturally emitted infrared heat from the arterial blood supply at about 1000 “frames” per second, locking in the highest temperature it senses and;
Second, at the same time, a patented system measures the ambient temperature of the site where the temperature is being taken. The patented “arterial heat balance” (AHB) software then synthesizes the two separate readings to accurately determine and display body temperature.

To see it in action and hear more pros and the cons, watch the vlog below:

Cons: The only Con that I can really find and mentioned in the video is the fact that it reads temperatures somewhat high, but if you know this to begin with, it’s not an issue.

The Bottom Line: Innovative temporal scanner that is accurate and easy to read.

Price: ARV is $59.99, but I’ve noticed it at Walmart and Target for about $10 less.

Where to Buy: Babies R Us, Target, Walmart, Walgreens

    Interesting and good to know in advance: Multiple temperatures taken over the same area in rapid succession will ultimately cool the area causing differences.

    Here it is “I heard the thermometer is sensitive to ambient temperature, is it?
    Yes, it is sensitive to ambient temperature, which is part of the reason it is so accurate. But, as long as the thermometer is in approximately the same ambient temperature as the individual whose temperature is being taken, you don’t have to be concerned.”

    The TemporalScanner Thermometer has been clinically tested for accuracy compared to rectal thermometers and temperature sensors inserted in the heart during course of patient treatment and accepted for use in major hospitals, making it the ideal thermometer for use with newborns, infants, children or adults.

    A major reason ear thermometers are considered inaccurate by medical professionals is because the positioning of the probe in the ear canal is inconsistent, thus creating inconsistent readings and frequently missing fevers.
