ptlogo1Potty Training.  We’ve all either been there, or are going to be there at one point if we have kids.  I can’t even begin to tell you the stress and pressure that I’ve felt with Chandler.  He will be 4 this fall and a lot of people have been surprised when I tell them he’s not potty training.  I’ve also had countless people tell me that when he’s ready, he’ll do it fast.  So I haven’t pushed it.  I’d rather change diapers until he is ready instead of cleaning up mess after mess.  This past month, he’s finally been showing some signs and interest.  I was all for it, but felt like I could use some help.  After all, I AM  rookie. That’s where Potty Tots came into play.

Jill Leech is the founder of Potty Tots.  As a mother of 3, she found herself struggling to potty train her youngest child.   Here is a little bit about Jill’s philosophy and Potty Tots:

I know that ALL children can benefit from various learning styles, structure and positive reinforcement. So I set out to find a potty training program that would not only show my daughter how to go potty, but would also engage her in the potty training process and encourage her to be independent and “Do” for herself.

As a teacher, my favorite motto for my students is,

“When I hear, I forget,

When I see, I remember,

When I DO, I understand.”

I believe all children can benefit from this philosophy of learning. From my experience, it is also SO important to make learning FUN! Children who are involved in their own learning and having fun are much more likely to be motivated, and successful.

Pros:  Chandler was so excited about the Potty Tots when they came in the mail.  There was a personalized certificate just for him.  He kept saying, “Oh cool!  I love the Totty Pots!”

The Potty Tots has 2 different kits, one for boys and one for girls.  I’m sure potty training girls is different, but I wouldn’t know since I only have boys.  Here’s what the kit includes:

A story/guide book
• Animated DVD -featuring three original Potty Tots songs and 2 bonus music videos
• One 11″X17″ Illustrated potty chart
(easily wipes clean with damp cloth)
• One 11″X17″ “Toilet Bowl” progress/reward game with clings
(easily wipes clean with damp cloth)

As we got using the kit, I realized how well thought out it was.  Chandler first saw the book and wanted me to read it to him.  Then he ran over to his potty and realized he had a potty just like the tots.  We put his illustrated potty chart on the wall, and talked about the different steps to going potty.  Next was his reward chart.  I really like the idea of clings, because you can use the reward chart over and over.  Chandler has earned various rewards including a little golf set, and is working on earning Hungry Hungry Hippos.  He loves moving the clings across the chart everytime he goes pee or poop in the toilet.

I already knew that the dvd would be a big hit.  Chandler walks around ALL of the time singing the Potty Tots song.  When we put the dvd in, he wants to watch it 5 times.  That’s ok by me, as long as he’s excited about potty training.

Here he is singing his potty tots song, and telling you what’s on the illustration chart:

My next step was to give him a lot to drink and let him run around naked.  After 2 sippy cups of chocolate milk, he ran to the potty and pee.  We reinforced the illustrated charts which you saw Chandler telling you about in the video. Here they are:

1. Pants Down
2. Go Potty
3. Wipe With Toilet Paper
4. Pants Up
5. Flush Toilet
6. Wash Hands

After doing all of these steps, we gave Chandler a treat and let him move his little boy on his cling chart. The boy’s cling chart is a football game, and you move your player down the field. Each time they go, they get a “down.” Cute idea.

Another thing that’s nice about this kit is that it is reusable. I can put everything away after Chandler is done and get it back out when Rowan is ready to potty train. It’s only $19.95 and was worth EVERY penny. That equals out to be about 3 weeks worth of diapers, so it’s a great investment.

We started the Potty Tots program 3 weeks ago, and with 2 weeks, Chan was potty trained. It’s amazing how well it has worked. We do struggle a lit bit when we are out and about. He has had a few accidents because he gets so involved with what he is doing, or where he is playing, that he forgets that he needs to tell me he has to go. I think this happens with almost every child though. I think that will take a bit more work, but he does a great job while we are at home. I love the fact that Chandler feels happy about what he is doing, and I can tell he’s proud of his accomplishment.

Cons: Are you kidding? My son was pretty much potty trained in 2 weeks. How can I complain about that?

The Bottom Line: Interactive affordable potty kit that encourages children to potty train.
