Tag Reading System
We have a whole bookshelf of books up in Chandler’s room. Both of the boys love to be read to and like to look at books by themselves as well. If you haven’t heard of the Leapfrog Tag Reading System, or haven’t seen it in action, prepare to be amazed. I have seen the Tag System in passing at the store but had never really taken the time to see what it was all about. After watching Chandler for 5 minutes with this product, I was impressed.leapfrogleapster

Pros: The Tag Reading System is an interactive way to help your child learn to read, and definitely increases a love for books. The tag reader pen shaped and allows it’s user to interact with tag books. Your child simply touches the reader to a spot on the page, and a tiny camera right behind the tip reads the page and plays sounds and words through the speaker on the reader. There are different options on the bottom of the page which allows your child to have the book read to them, play games and more. It seems a bit hard to explain, so watch Chandler using the reader in the video below.

The tag reader also has a headphone jack which makes this great for travel. It is extremely easy to use and is a great size for smaller hands. The tag reader we received came with The Cat in the Hat already installed on it. We have a few other tag books and I had to install software in addition to the Leapster2 we already had installed. Once that was done, I was able to download the other books onto the Tag reader so that Chandler could read them. The tag has 32 MB of memory, and allows you to store up to 10 books on it.

The tag also has the option for your child to just listen to a book, even if they don’t have it with them.
I really like that the tag challenges your child in more way than one and really gives them the opportunity to explore books. With over 25 books to choose from, the tag has something for everyone.
Chandler also has some tag activity cards that teach him about animals. He is really enjoying them as well and it puts a fun spin on having options other than just books.  The tag reading system is appropriate for kids ages 4-8.Leapfrog-activity-cards-for-tag

Cons: When I went to install the Tag Reader software, the tag wouldn’t connect to Leapfrog connect. I started to get frustrated when I got an error message, and finally went to Leapfrog’s customer support. I found my answer toward the top of the FAQ’s, and come to find out a file was written incorrectly when trying to sync. I had to go to another computer to get it installed. I solved my problem immediately and I had no other problems, however it seems that this is a common problem with other users if it was towards the top of the FAQ’s.
I think it was a pretty minor con – overall we love the Tag Reading System.
