I haven’t been around for a couple days because my little Rowan is in the hospital.  He was diagnosed with asthma at around 1 year old and gets pretty wheezy when he gets a cold.

Last Sunday, hubby and I took him into the ER because he was breathing really fast and our breathing treatments at home weren’t helping.  They said he had an ear infection, gave him a breathing treatment and basically sent us home.

Thursday we went into our pediatrician for a follow up and well child checkups for he and Chandler.  It ended up being not such a well child checkup.  Rowan was really sick and our ped tested him for rsv, which came back positive.  He was also wheezing pretty badly and had 3 breathing treatments back to back.  During the 3rd one, he fell asleep.  When checking his oxygen, his saturation level was only at 79% while he was asleep.  Normal oxygen level is 95-97%.  Once you drop below 90%, you need help breathing.  After realizing he wasn’t going up, we were ambulanced to a children’s hospital about 30 minutes away.  He was monitored in the ER for 5 1/2 hours, and didn’t do well when they would take oxygen away, so they decided to admit him.  Here he is this morning, on room air for the time being and doing quite well.

He has been deep suctioned on a regular basis and has breathing treatments ever 2-4 hours depending on how well he’s doing.  Here I sit 2 days later, hoping that his oxygen levels are good enough that we can go home today.  It’s sad and a bit scary having your child so sick.
