Strider Prebike – Review & Giveaway (closed)
Learning to Ride a Bike
Learning to ride a bike is definitely a milestone in a child’s life. Having mom and dad run beside them, using training wheels, finally getting it on their own. But what if you had a bike that prepped your child to go straight to riding without training wheels? That’s where the Strider Prebike comes in. The Strider bike is a running bike for young kids, aged 2-5. The bike has no pedals, and allows your child to run while on the bike. The concept is to teach your child balance and coordination before pedaling, so your child can go directly from the Strider bike to a normal bike with pedals.
Pros: The boys only have a tricycle, because that’s what Chandler used last year, and we’d never even heard of the Strider bike. So when I saw the idea behind the bike, I was more than excited. The bike came as shown below and was incredibly easy to assemble. It has two different seats to accomodate children of different heights.
Once we had the bike assembled, Chandler was all too excited to get on it and get going. The first few times, he was incredibly wobbly, and went very slow. He’s never been on something with 2 wheels, so he was taking his time. Over the last month, we’ve gone out at least a few times a week to let Chandler ride his Strider bike. He’s doing awesome now, and has gotten great at speed, balance, and coordination. This video is of him just this last week, after using his bike for about a month.
Some of the things that are really great about the Strider:
- Extremely light. At less than 7 lbs, Chandler can carry it around.
- Frame has launch pad foot rests for your child to be able to rest their feet as they get better at balance and are able to coast.
- Puncture-proof all-terrain tires with sealed bearings and 5/16″ steel axles.
- 50 lb weight limit. (Chandler is 4 1/2 and is only 39 lbs, so this will accomodate most children from 2-5.)
- Handle and seat are adjustable
- Comes in 6 different and fun colors
It’s been fun to not only see Chandler ride the bike, but to have other parents show interest. Just last week we were out on a Sunday walk. We passed a couple with two small girls, one who was struggling on a bike with training wheels. As Chandler zipped by, they stopped me to ask about the bike. They were impressed with his balance, and I’m sure it was something they looked into when they got home.
Cons: The age range on this bike is 2-5. Rowan is almost 2 1/2 and just does not get this bike. I know that every child is different, but he kind of walks with it for a minute, or falls over. We’ve tried many times with him, and I think he just needs another 6 months to figure it out and feel comfortable. So if you buy this bike for a smaller child, it may take them a bit longer to catch on.
Other than that, I have a hard time finding anything wrong with the body, make, or durability of the bike. It really serves it’s purpose.
