Diaper Pail Test Drive, Diaper Genie II Elite Review
Diaper Pail Test Drive
This month our diapers are testing the limits in a Diaper Pail Test Drive on behalf of Mom Central. We were sent two different diaper pails to try and test out, and we have been alternating them a week at a time. It’s been interesting to note the differences, and what I like and don’t like about each one. The first one that I want to tell you about is the Diaper Genie II Elite.
Background
This isn’t the first time that we’ve used a diaper genie. We actually had one that we used with Chandler right after he was born. Since that was 4 1/2 years ago, I was interested to see how things changed. According to Playtex, the Diaper Genie Elite is the #1 selling diaper disposal system against germs and odors. It also has a patent pending double-locked pail design and multi-layer refill seals in odor and germs.
Pros: I have to say that diaper genie has come a long way in the last 4-5 years. The diaper genie that we used to have, you had to push the diaper into the top of the pail, and then twist the outside a few times. That would apparently twist off the smell, and when you went to take the diapers out, they resembled sausage links. However, I don’t think the odor control was all that great, because we ended up putting it outside our back door because the smell got to be so bad sometimes. Because our last experience with Diaper Genie wasn’t 100% positive, I was interested to see the changes and improvements.
The pail is actually quite large and holds a lot of diapers. Rowan is in a size 4 diaper, and 2 1/2 years old. We were able to get about 15 diapers in the pail before it had to be refilled. This is roughly 5 days of diapers for us, considering we don’t always change all of our diapers at home.
And in case you are curious, a diaper genie refill will hold the following amount of diapers: 270 Newborn diapers, 233 #1 diapers, 192 #2 diapers, 176 #3 diapers, 144 #4 diapers and 105 #5 diapers. So the refill is like a continuous garbage bag. One the pail is full, you cut the bag, and pull it down, and you are set to go again. This is a nice feature.
The bottom of the pail actually has a foot pedal that you push down. The top then pops up, you simply drop the diaper in, and when you release the foot pedal, the diaper is dropped down into the pail. Can I just say that I love not having to touch the pail or squish the diaper down in? Because that’s disgusting when you have to do that.

When your pail is full, the pail comes apart in the middle, and you use the cutting tool inside to cut the liner. Then simply tie off and toss. I have to say the whole process is much less stinky than it used to be.

As far as odor control goes, it actually does a pretty good job. We keep it in our kitchen by our garbage can since we don’t have a nursery, the boys share a room, and it is more practical there.
Cons: At first I was a bit turned off by how huge this pail seemed. Hubby thought it was cool that it was so big, I thought it just seemed big. I guess I’ve gotten used to it over time though.
Since we are using this pail with a toddler and size 4 diapers, sometimes if I don’t have the diaper rolled tight enough, it doesn’t drop right down into the base of the pail, and then I have to push it down or re-wrap it. I don’t particularly like that. Odor control is good, however, if you have a lot of poopy diapers in it, you tend to get that coming back up when you open the top to put another diaper in.
If you have an older child, the refills can get pricey because you have to change them more often. It seems like the average price for a refill is around $7.
Price: Around $35
Where to Buy: Amazon, Walmart, or a retailer near you.
