Online Experiences?

So I’ve been thinking about a LOT of things lately. One being this whole online world. It’s great to connect with others, network, and build friendships. I know some pretty amazing people online and have even gotten to meet a few of them.

Although there is a lot of positive that you can find online, there also comes the negative. This really bothers me because a lot of people wouldn’t do or say some of the things that they would to a person’s face, but it’s ok to do it online. Someone may know nothing about you, but make assumptions and tear you down. This is the part that I really don’t get and I’ve seen it in a few different situations. I don’t feel entitled to form an opinion of someone unless I feel like I know them myself. This can be through meeting them, getting to know them through forums, or other social networking outlets. So why do SO many people form opinions and attack those they don’t even really know? I actually had a comment that I had to trash last week because it said horrible things about me and my family. I don’t even know this person and it affected my entire day. I definitely have strong opinions about certain things, but you will never find me putting others down, or finding fault when I don’t even really know them. Not cool. I’m really curious to know what kind of experiences you have had online?

Tiff is the creator of Babes and Kids. She has two little boys, Chandler (5) and Rowan (3). She works part time as a clerk in an ER, and is currently studying Ultrasound in school, so there is never a dull moment. I’ve had negative experiences, just like everyone has. As I have had more and more, I just ignore the people, delete/block them if I can, and just keep my head up high. Some people are just way too bored with their own lives that they have to come criticize and tear down other peoples self esteem.

I agree – people say things online that would not be spoken face-to-face…I guess it’s because there is a certain form of anonymity when commenting online. We are all humans with feelings and emotions – whether we’re online or not!!
I am a very, very sensitive person, so I totally understand why it would have clouded your entire day after that. One thing I have learned is that when people make comments that are hurtful, the comment is mostly a reflection of them and their situation, NOT you!

I definitely agree that people feel braver to sit behind a computer and type something mean than to say it to your face. Just know you’re an amazing person and are doing amazing things no matter what anyone else says!

Mixed feelings here too. 999 out of 1000 of my interactions are wonderfully positive and uplifting, but you always have that one stinker who likes to try to bring you down. Unfortunately, it works. Just remember the 999 positives, and delete the negative. I usually have to call someone and laugh it off. I have a wonderful story about a (MEAN) crazy dog lady, if you ever need a good laugh. Hang in there!

The nice thing is you probably have a way of deleting their comment on your blog, twitter, or facebook pages. Granted you’ve already read what they’ve typed, but just try and hit a delete button in your mind.
I know that’s easier said than done though. I have a hard time forgetting what people have said to me. Actually I have a harder time forgetting what’ve they’ve typed/said, than forgetting the actual person. Maybe that’s their angle, they don’t want to be forgotten so they shock to try to gain a foothold in your mind.
Yet, wouldn’t it be better to be remembered for being a kind, supportive soul, that one that tears others down to build themselves up. Ahh well, such is the world today whether online or in person.

Yes, it’s definitely nice to be able to delete comments, but your right, it still weighs on the back of your mind. Yes, it’s much better to be remembered as the kind one. Thanks for your comment

As you know, I’ve been dealing with some online negativity lately, too. I need to remind myself it’s coming from one person who knows absolutely NOTHING about me. And, you’re right, I highly doubt she is as vile and hateful in person as she is online – it’s easy to be so high and mighty when you’re alone behind a keyboard. In reality, I feel sorry for her that attacking people she doesn’t know online is what it takes to make her feel valuable. Now, that is sad.

Overall, my positive experience far outweigh the negative. I’ve met some people I consider friends from online communities and my blog.

It’s so true. When someone knows nothing about you, it makes it even weirder. I do have to say that the positive experiences have outweighed the negative as well. Otherwise, I don’t think I’d be here

My DH moderates a forum and we often talk about the crazy things people do… even when kindly reminded not to flame or engage in personal attacks, some people just can’t help themselves. Too easy in the impersonal world online.

Don’t let it get you down. I have met and interacted with some fabulous people, found some great blogs and overall have had a positive experience, too. In my case the good has outweighed the bad.

It’s definitely hard not to let it rattle you. And it’s so true about how you said the online world can be impersonal. So true. I can only imagine what your hubby has seen in moderating a forum. It’s nice to see others have great positive experiences. Thanks for taking the time to comment!

These people are keyboard warriors and what they type so fast and furiously on the Internet, many would never DARE say the same things to the other person if standing right in front of them. Blogs and websites are a TINY glimpse into someone else’s life. Everyone has a “cutsey” page where they put their best foot forward… then they feel the need to attack elsewhere, somehow feeling superior. In reality it is much like looking through that peep hole on your front door. You are getting a very, very limited view.

You have to grow a really thick skin and let things roll off of you. Just look at it as SPAM generated automatically. If you can look at those horrible negative comments that way and not as an actual person ACTUALLY writing such off base things, it will help your mental psyche.

No worries. Friends come and go… your family is always here… especially your wise older sister.

That’s so true what you said about a tiny glimpse and looking through a peephole. And yes, attacking makes people feel superior, but in a way I think it shows lack of confidence and self esteem. I know what you mean about getting a thick skin. I’ve learned in certain situations to hold my tongue, or maybe I should say my keyboard because I know it’s JUST not worth it. Thanks for the advice.
