Making a Difference
Being a mom, I love hearing about organizations that are based around helping and educating kids. Champions for Kids is one of those organizations. Their mission is to:
mobilize MILLIONS of people by providing training and resources to improve the lives of children in communities across America and beyond. Our goal is to mobilize 20 Million people by 2020.
Pretty neat, right? Energizer and Champions for Kids have partnered to educate and help kids to be prepared in emergencies, accidents and more. Upon learning about Champions for Kids, I took it upon myself to start educating my little guy who is in kindergarten. I was surprised at the things he wasn’t sure of, or things that he already knew. It was a good opportunity to tell him what he should do in case of an emergency, emergency items we have at home, our phone number, address and so forth. Part of my educating experience was propelled by some of these statistics:
- Over 9 million children suffer from non-fatal injuries each year, and accidents are the leading cause of death for children. Additionally, dangerous weather events cause hundreds of deaths and thousands of injuries every year.
- 70% of power outages in the U.S. are weather related. Numerous power failures are caused by natural weather phenomena such as lightening, rain, snow, ice, wind, and even dust.
- The Center of Disease Control recommends having a kit ready in preparation for any emergency that may arise. They recommend the kit include food, water, flash light, extra batteries, medications, first aid kit, sanitation and personal hygiene items, copies of personal documents, and other necessities.
How You Can Help
Champions for Kids and Energizer have more than a worthy cause, but in order to make the most impact, they need your help! You can help by rallying your family members and friends to educate them. You could also put together emergency kits for kids and donate them to a shelter or organization near you. Learn about the needs in your community and make a step!
My son and I ventured out to Walmart yesterday to put together an Energizer Champions for Kids kit. I will share more details with you in the next few days, but I am excited to donate it and see that we are making a difference. Until then, make sure to visit Champions for Kids to learn more about how you can help.

This is the first I’d heard of this. A really great Idea. It makes sense to me that having some general emergency supplies will free up the burden on local shelters to put their focus on dealing more with region-specific issues.

I can’t imagine how much money the people who run these shelters spend out of their own pocket. This is a wonderful program, any help matters so much!
