Marathon Running Series – Goals and Favorite Things

Sometimes I feel a bit crazy for signing up to run another marathon. I am running the Rock N’ Roll marathon in Denver in September. My brother will be running it with me, and I couldn’t be more excited. It’s about a 7 hour drive from where we live, but he’s run a Rock N’ Roll marathon before and said they are a lot of fun!

I run on a very regular basis, but I wanted to share some of my favorite training products and also keep you updated as to where I am with my marathon training. I am running a half marathon in 2 weeks, and a 10K in about 3 1/2 weeks. I have just about 12 weeks before my full marathon and I have some goals in mind.

1. Finish in 4:45 or less. My last marathon I finished in 5:12. It was my first marathon and I REALLY struggled after mile 20. I had to run/walk the last 6 miles as I was hurting so badly. I need to work on endurance.

2. Follow a specific training plan. I am following Hal Higdon’s Intermediate Marathon Training Plan. Although my days are a bit different, I just finished week 6 with a 9 mile run on Saturday.

3. Clean up my eating. I am generally pretty good about watching my calories and eating until it hits 7 or 8 at night. I can tell a big difference in my runs when I’ve been eating better versus eating things that I shouldn’t.

4. Run at least twice a week outside. I have a treadmill and do a lot of my running inside. This is because it has been so hot outside, and I just haven’t had the willpower to get up at 6 am to go run. I usually end up going to bed too late and thus my motivation lacks when my alarm goes off in the morning. Although I can adjust incline, speed, etc on my treadmill, it isn’t quite the same as running outside.

5. Pace myself on long runs. Generally speaking, I run at about a 9:30 mile, unless it’s a race then I can push myself a little more. I start to lose some serious steam after 10 miles, so I’m going to be pacing myself at 10:30 miles on runs longer than 10 miles to keep myself going.

I’m going to curb my goals at just 5 so that they seem attainable to me. Over the next 4 weeks, I’m going to be sharing my training with you as well as some of my favorite products. I have really come to have some favorite products over the last 2 1/2 years that I’ve been avidly running. Watch for these posts weekly…more if I can get them in!

One last thing that I wanted to touch on is how popular running has become. I had never run more than a few miles before 2 1/2 years ago, and now I find myself running marathons. I’ve come to realize the power of the mind and that your body can do anything your mind tells it to. I’ve seen so many friends who have never run or walked distances picking it up, losing weight, and making goals. Have you been hit by the running/walking bug? What inspired you? Are you signed up for a 5K, 10K or even a half or full marathon this summer? If so, I want to know about it!

Brooke, thanks for stopping by! WTG on your half marathon, which one did you run? Where are you guys at now? We’re so bad at keeping in contact. It would be fun to get together some time this summer….

Even though I walk daily, I just can’t see myself running a marathon! Maybe someday!

There was a story last week that said men receive more health benefits from sprinting intermittently for 20 minutes as opposed to jogging.

Very cool read! I actually did a marathon once in the early 90s. My time was a little over 5 hours too and i remember doing a lot of walking toward the end as well. 🙂

You are so sweet. Like I said in the post, it’s mind over matter. You’d be amazed at what your body can do if you put your mind to it. I think you’d also be surprised at how fun and addicting races can be. You should sign up for a 10K or even a half marathon – you’d totally be able to do it with the amount of exercise you’ve been putting in. And PS – it goes both ways. I’ve ALWAYS looked up to you and wanted to be like you. 🙂

I’ve never done a marathon, but I’ve always wanted to. I finally purchased a treadmill, but I haven’t been given the go-ahead from the doctor to begin using it. Once I get approval, I’m getting my butt in gear to do a marathon once I have this baby 😉

Yay for a treadmill! They are so nice to have. You definitely have more important things going on right now, I hope you are feeling well!! And once you’ve delivered and have healed, you definitely should train for a race, I bet you would be fantastic.
