Eating on the Go
I thought my life would slow down a bit when I graduated at the end of July. Not so. I got a job working part time, both my boys started school, I have a marathon to run in 2 weeks, and I still have to keep up on the house. I’ll be the first to admit that there are meals that I’m looking for shortcuts on. That includes lunches, both at work and when I’m at home while the boys are at school. I want something that I can prepare quickly, but that can be hot. Barilla Microwaveable Meals are a good solution to my lunch time dilemmas. I eat a lot of carbs because I run so much, and pastas are one of the things I reach for because of that.

Barilla Microwaveable meals come in five different varieties:

  • Tomato & Basil
  • Marinara
  • Spicy Marinara
  • Whole Grain Tomato and Basil
  • Whole Grain Vegetable Marinara

These meals have no preservatives and are ready to eat in 60 seconds. I like that they don’t have to be refrigerated or frozen. They can be stored in the pantry and popped in the microwave when you are ready to eat! The meals are situated in an oval container, with a small separate container on the left that contains the pasta sauce. You open the sauce side to vent, and when the pasta is cooked, you peel back the rest of the wrapper and pour the sauce on top of the pasta. My only complaint about these meals is that I burned my finger opening them…twice. The instructions on the wrapper tell you to keep hold of the sauce container while pulling the wrapping off. However, the seal seems to be extra tight between the pasta and the sauce. The first time I made it, I tried to pull the seal off quickly, and was burned by the sauce and steam. The second time I was a bit slower and still got a minor burn. Third time was a charm. I opened it very slowly and was very careful about how I did it. I almost wondered if the seal being hard to open between the pasta and the sauce was just the few packages I tried, but all 5 that we sampled were like that. It’s a little bit of a con, but the pros definitely outweigh it.

The taste of these meals is absolutely delicious. I love that two of the options are offered in whole grain, since we try to buy whole grain or whole wheat pasta most of the time. The whole grain Fusilli with vegetable marinara was my favorite. I loved the noodles, the sauce, and the fact that I was getting 44% of my daily intake of fiber.  It definitely keeps you full longer.   The texture of the noodles were great and the sauce tasted fresh.  This particular meal is also packed with 11 grams of protein and comes in at 320 calories. I love adding some fresh tomatoes and chicken to them. Along with some freshly steamed veggies, you have a total meal for under 500 calories. One improvement I would like to see made is the amount of sodium. Although it is comparable or less than other prepackaged meals, I’d love to see Barilla do a reduced sodium meal.
