Quiet Boxes for School Aged Children

This summer, I promised myself that I would be a lot more structured with my kids. They seem to thrive on structure as most kids do. Our schedule includes breakfast in the morning, picking up the house, doing some sort of activity in the morning and then some quiet time in the afternoon. For the quiet time, I wanted different activities that would engage them for a full hour. I put together the boxes without them knowing what is in them, so it is a surprise each week.

Quiet Boxes for School Aged Kids

I’ve seen these boxes done for preschool aged children, but never school aged kids. I decided to do the days by themes, and then I switch out the boxes a bit at the first of each week depending on if anything needs to be replenished. I used 6 quart sterilite boxes from Amazon. They are only a couple dollars each and can be used for other storage items even after your child grows out of the quiet boxes.

My kids only get an hour or so with the box and then all of the supplies go back and they don’t see them again for another week. This keeps the items in the box fresh and fun so they look forward to it. I spent about $50 out of pocket for all of the boxes and supplies for 2 kids which I think isn’t too much of an overhead cost. You could do it for even cheaper if you have certain supplies already at home.

Daily Quiet Boxes

The best part about all of this, is that you can buy it all from Amazon, have it shipped to your home, assemble and then never even have to go to the store for supplies.  Below are some great ideas on items that you can add to your quiet boxes.  I’ve also included our themes below!

Our themes for this week included:

  • Monday: ColoringColor wonder, Leapfrog dry erase boards, coloring books, 97 cent activity books from Walmart)
  • Tuesday: Puzzles – I picked up a few new puzzles from the dollar store and Amazon. I put a new puzzle inside their box and also get down all of their other puzzles. They get to put together the new puzzle and then do the others. You can find all sorts of Puzzles for Kids and they keep them entertained for quite some time.  Only pull the puzzles out when you do the quiet boxes!
  • Wednesday: Games – I included games like Skip-bo, crazy 8’s and sight word cards for my son going into Kindergarten. I sit down to play with them and they love it. These are special games we only pull out on Wednesday.
  • Thursday: Battles/Toys – Because I have two boys, my boys loved the soldiers. They had a nice long battle. Other ideas for this day throughout the summer include a lego day and play-doh.
  • Friday: Crafts – We have ceramic crafts to paint, shrinky dinks and other other crafts I’ve found from online. We are also subscribing to KiwiCrate for the summer and I will put their supplies in their Friday boxes when they come month by month.

Quiet Boxes Summer Activities for Kids

My boys have been out of school for a week and a half and the quiet boxes have been such a big hit. They ask everyday when they get to do quiet boxes and it’s something for them to look forward to. It also gives you fun quality time with your kids each afternoon.

What a fun idea! I like that each child has their own set of boxes so you can make it age appropriate. I’m going to try this even though we into summer. I may do a smaller version for our 5 hour car ride for vacation in August. Thanks for sharing!

This is such a good idea. I’ve seen a lot of homeschoolers use this method in their schooling, especially with multiple aged children so that mom can spend time one on one without another sibling distracting them. Using it during vacation time is great, and you can “sneak” some learning into it as well!
