The 21 Day Sugar Detox After Having a Baby
This last year, we had a few life changes. In August, our beautiful baby girl was born, and then the first of December we closed on a new home. Packing, moving, getting up in the night with a baby, keeping up with two other busy boys and working caught up to me. I began cooking less and our family started eating out more. I relied heavily on the caffeine in my daily intake of soda to get me through the day and I still was dragging. I’d also hit a plateau with postpartum weight loss. I decided that I needed a change and an intervention.  The picture below is me about 11 weeks ago and represents quite well what I looked like before I started the detox.  Yes, some of that is baby belly, but some of it is bloat from eating badly.

 

 

 

Towards the end of the year, I noticed my friend Kim  from They Smell talking about how she had just finished the 21 day sugar detox. I stepped back to look at my sugar and processed food intake and sadly realized that it was all I was taking in. Reality also began to hit that I had signed up for a half marathon, a full marathon and a relay series which span from April to June. I needed energy and something had to change.

 

On our way home from Christmas break, I downloaded The 21-Day Sugar Detox: Bust Sugar & Carb Cravings Naturally by Diane Sanfilippo for my ipad. The idea behind the book intrigued me and by the time our 4 hour car ride was over, I’d read it. I knew what I needed to do.

A week before the detox, I started making preparations. I knew I didn’t want to fail so we ate up certain foods that I couldn’t eat that I knew would be a temptation. I menu planned, went grocery shopping, filled my cart with whole foods and felt good about it.

 

 

The premises of this book is to curb carb and sugar cravings so that you don’t have them. It’s about eating whole foods and doing what’s good for your body. I also like that there are modifications for someone like me who is nursing and exercising. There are a lot of detox or diet programs that you can’t do while you are nursing as it could compromise your milk supply. I am 7 days in and have a great milk supply so I know it definitely does not deplete it.

 

Day 1 and 2 were the worst for me. I went from drinking soda everyday to not having it at all. I had horrible headaches and was craving sugar. I quickly came to realize that this whole detox is a mental game. Every time that I found myself craving sugar, I drank water or ate a food on the approved list. I would think about what I was putting in my mouth and how it would benefit me later.

 

I am now 8 days into the detox. It’s not necessarily to lose weight, but I’ve dropped almost 7 lbs and have energy and motivation that I have literally not had in years. I feel alert and my mind feels less cloudy. I feel more positive and upbeat and an overall great feeling. The picture below was only 4 days into my detox, when I had lost 5 lbs.

 

 

I still have 13 days left but I know that I can do it! I have certain foods that I will probably introduce back into my diet, but it’s amazing what good food will do you for your body. If you are interested in learning more about The 21-Day Sugar Detox, you can purchase it on Amazon.

    Oh wow, 7 lbs in 8 days – that really does show how much salt, and sugar can bloat one up (and if it’s doing that to our bodies no wonder we feel so sluggish!). Good Luck on the rest of the program, and I’m looking forward to seeing the final results!

    I need to do this, but I find when I go paleo or something similar like this all at once, my body freaks out. I get weak, shaky, tired, and have moods swings. I’m sure it’s just something I need to power through but tell that to my family who has to live with me!

    Wow, what an accomplishment! I am in my last week of pregnancy and have become really aware of all the sugar I eat and crave because I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I was so good at controlling my cravings at first and sticking to a diet, but now I’m giving in and I know it isn’t good for me. I would love to try something like this after giving birth, since I’ll be at an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes (and it is just plain good for you!). I love that there is a plan for a nursing momma. Sounds awesome! Thanks for sharing!

    The one thing I really do want to change this year is cutting out my diet soda at-home use. I’ll allow myself to have it at restaurants but that’s it. At home I want to drink water. Every week I get closer to starting it. I’m not quite ready, but heck, last year I wouldn’t have even considered it. Progress!

      I totally get you! I am normally a total soda drinker. I LOVE coke, dr. pepper, pepsi. I love it all, lol. I was drinking it daily and decided that I need to use it as a special treat after this detox. I feel so much better without it everyday and replace it with water.

    Giving up the sugar can be so difficult, but it makes a big difference not just in weight loss, but in how you feel too! I haven’t completely cut sugar out of my diet, but I only have it in certain things, like baked goods. I always feel better when I don’t have it!

      Yeah, I’m feeling SO much better. I love sugar and sweet treats and always will, but I just want to be able to curb the sweet tooth. :)

    I have cut out soft drinks but have to get going on eliminating sugar. I realize that I am both the problem and solution to me being over weight.
