Bright Starts InGenuity Bouncer

Written by Natalie, Guest Reviewer

Bright Starts InGenuity Bouncer in Shiloh
It’s been six years since I purchased my last bouncer and boy have they made improvements! This new bouncer took about 30 minutes to put it together and I was really impressed once we got it set up and the batteries in it. The fabric is really soft and a nice gender neutral color palette. It comes with two neck support/pillows which are really handy with a newborn. Both are removable which is also nice for cleaning and when the baby gets a bit older. The pad is easily removable which is essential when you have a newborn. My last bouncer was a nightmare to get the pad off, this one just has two clasps in the back and it comes right off.

The battery powered part of the bouncer that makes it bounce, and plays sounds and music is also removable. I think this is genius because you can put it in the crib or bring it on car rides or hotels where there might be a lot of noise. It also has a bunch of great features to it. It not only plays quiet lullabies, but it also has a white noise sound, water sounds, and outdoor sounds. I can see myself using the white noise generator well beyond my use of the bouncer- especially since it’s so portable. The sound volume can be turned up/down or off. The bouncing mechanism has two features. There is a bouncing option or a heartbeat option. This means it moves the bouncer to the rhythm of a heartbeat. I am excited to try this feature out with my next newborn; it seems like such a great idea. The bounce/music unit also has a 30 minute timer and will automatically shut off at that time.
The bouncer comes with a removable toy bar with two plush animals hanging down. The toy bar seems to come on and off easily which will be nice because sometimes toy bars can be over stimulating when your little one is trying to go to sleep. It is also adjustable if you don’t want to take it off completely.
I am a little concerned that the music might not be loud enough even on its loudest setting, but other than that, it seems like a great bouncer!

Picture With Santa….Or Not?

Last week I took the boys to see Santa at one of our local malls.  Right as we got in line I saw a big sign that basically said, “You don’t pay, you don’t get a picture with Santa.”  It wasn’t quite that blunt, but basically they wouldn’t let you take pictures with Santa with your own camera or cell phones.  That’s totally fine, but I did want a picture of the boys with Santa so I inquired of the pricing.  $25 for 1 5×7 and 2 4×6 photos.  WOW.  That’s like 1000% markup.  If I were to get those prints elsewhere, it would cost me less than $2.  Of course the pricing went up from there, with there being a $60 package, for pictures….with Santa.  Really?  I understand that businesses need to make money, but I actually think they would get more business if they lowered their prices.  I think if it had been $8 or $10 for that lowest package, I probably would have bought some pictures.  I paid attention to the people in front of us, and out of about 8 different kids that saw Santa, only 1 parent purchased a photo package.  The boys loved seeing Santa, however this is our “Santa” picture this year…. ;)

Toyland Express Book + $50 Visa Gift Card Giveaway

Toyland Express Book
Reading with my boys is one of my favorite things to do with them. We have a bedtime ritual where we read together. I never realized how much it’s helped just to read until my kindergartner came home with his sight words that he had to know by the end of the year, and he knows most all of them! This Christmas Eve, there will be a special gift under our tree. Along with the boy’s jammies that they get every year, there will also be a book for us to enjoy before bedtime. Can You See What I See? Toyland Express!, is going to be that book. Not only will it be fun for us to read together, but this particular book is a search-and-solve picture puzzle book. That means that the gears in their little heads will be turning. :) Walter Wick is author of the book, and if he seems familiar, it’s because he also authored the I Spy Series. We have a few of the I Spy books, so Walter Wick was in our collection even before this book.

About Can You See What I See? Toyland Express!

CAN YOU SEE WHAT I SEE? TOYLAND EXPRESS, the eighth title in the bestselling search-and-find series, follows the life of a toy train from the workshop to the attic, only to be rescued at a yard sale and brought to life once again in a new home. As readers search for more than 250 hidden objects, they will also notice how the train takes on various transformations along its journey.

Here is a behind the scenes look at how Walter Wick is inspired and makes this book come to life:

Definitely one I would recommend, this book retails for $12.99 at Scholastic, but you can buy it through Amazon for $8.87 Can You See What I See? Toyland Express!

Stocking Stuffer Idea for Boys: The Trash Pack Toys

Trash Pack Stocking Stuffers
I’m sure you’re wondering how in the world a trash pack is a good stocking stuffer, but titles can be deceiving, right? Back during Halloween, we had the opportunity to hand out The Trash Pack, a line of collectibles to our trick or treaters. They were definitely a huge hit and because we had over 100 trick or treaters, they were gone within the first half hour.

About the Trash Pack:

With more than 100 Trash Pack characters aka Trashies to choose from, kids can collect and swap a host of Bin Monsters, Bin-Sects, Hard Rubbish, Grubz, Bin Critters and Bin-Fections with names like Putrid Pizza, Garbage Gull, Germ-Worm, and Mucky Maggot. Each Trashie figure comes in three different colors and is awarded a special status common, rare, ultra rare, special edition or exclusive Trashie depending on its collectability and how easy it is to find. There are even glow-in-the-dark Trashies, who stand out among their less desirable trash-mates in dark and dingy bins. Children can play games with their Trashies like Take out the Trash, Stack the Trash, and more. What makes The Trash Pack even more appealing is the Limited Edition Trashies King Rat, Trash Cat, and Soggy Tomato. A limited amount of these grimy guys can only be found in a selection of packs worldwide!

These are fun little toys and are perfect for stocking stuffers. The boys have a few of their own and have had fun playing with them. It’s a simple concept and totally boy. They are only $3 for a two pack too, so they won’t break the bank. You can buy Trash Pack at Toys R Us, or Amazon – Trash Pack Collectors Pack.

Vtech Innotab – Kid’s Learning Tablet Review

Learning Tablet for Kids
There are a couple of new kid’s tablets on the market this year which I am really excited about. If the kids have their own tablets, they aren’t begging me to play my ipad as soon as I get it out. The InnoTab is a new learning table for kids ages 4-9 years old. Having 2 boys in this age range, it was a perfect fit for our house.

About the Innotab from Vtech (Amazon)
Take learning to the next level with the InnoTab Interactive Learning Tablet by VTech! This multi-media tablet combines interactive reading, learning games, creative activities, and a rich collection of applications into a sleek and durable toy that kids will want to play with. Featuring a 5″ color touch screen and tilt-sensor, kids can tap, flick, drag, and pat their way to learning fun. The fun continues with many on-board applications such as an MP3 Player, Video Player, Art Studio, Interactive Globe, Friends List, Calculator, and Clock engaging kids for hours as they develop their skills. Additional cartridges with favorite licensed characters are sold separately and teach essential skills in reading, logic, and creativity. Additional content such as e-books and games can easily be uploaded to the InnoTab through VTech’s Learning Lodge Navigator where parents can also see their child’s progress on a variety of educational milestones and lessons.

Our Experience
Because we have reviewed another kid’s tablet this season, I feel like I have a better feel for what we do and don’t like about this tablet. First of all, it has a lot of different capabilities. The innotab is actually set up much like an ipad would be. When you get to the home screen, you see different icons that you can touch with your finger. Right off, I noticed that the touch sensitivity isn’t quite what I would like it to be. Often times, I see the boys touching the screen a couple of times to get the application or game to open to do what they want it to do.
You can personalize the Innotab for your child. Each time they tearn the tablet on, they choose their name and it goes to their personalized settings. A child can either go into their personal account or play as a guest. I wish that it had the option for more than 1 user to have settings. It’s one user and then guest, so it’s hard to really have two children share the tablet.
Once you get to the home screen, there are 13 different applications that are already built in. These include things like a clock, calendar, calculator, notes, music, settings, e-reader, games, photos, color, art studio, and videos. The calendar, calculator and notes seem like simple applications, but my 6 year old has really enjoyed them. He’s put everyone’s birthdays into his calendar as well as holidays and more. He was able to navigate and do all of this by himself which lets you know that it is really user friendly. There’s also a friend’s app that includes friends e-mail addresses, birthday, telephone numbers and more. I don’t know how much a child would use this, but I guess it’s fun to have anyways.

As far as features and accessories and batteries go, there are definitely some pros and cons. The tablet itself is great for small hands. There are grippers on each of the sides so that the InnoTab doesn’t get dropped. Although the grippers are nice, I think that it takes up a lot of room on the tablet and the actual screen really isn’t that big. The tablet can also be viewed either in landscape or portrait mode, depending on how you have the tablet tilted. There is a stand on the back of the tablet that sets it up to be viewed in either of these modes. This creates for great play as your child has both hands free to be able to play with the tablet. There is a slot for cartridge games, and a stylus/pen if your child would rather use that than their finger. There’s also a jack for headphones, an ac adapter jack, and place to connect a usb cord. The tablet has buttons on the side of the screen that will take you back to home, and adjust the brightness and sound as well as turn the power on and off.

Batteries…this is one subject that it usually a sore subject for me. The InnoTab take 4AA batteries which you put in on the back. We’ve eaten through 3 sets of batteries in not quite a month, so I’m not impressed with the battery life. You can buy an adapter to plug the Innotab in. It will override the batteries which is a nice option, but how often to kids play near an outlet? We use this in the car a lot and there’s not an option for outlets there unless we want to invest in something. I really wish that this had a rechargeable lithium battery like other electronic devices. This would definitely be a deciding factor for me in purchasing a tablet. Seems silly, but we spend SO much money on batteries every year, it’s a bit ridiculous. Other feature improvements would be a camera/video camera. If I am going to spend $80 on a learning tablet, I’d love for it to have a camera.
The games and e-reader are excellent. They provide quality educational content and are fun for both of my boys to play. My almost 4 year old is pretty amazing at one of the problem solving games, and I love seeing him think and work through things. Overall, I think this is a good tablet. It could use a few improvements, but overall it’s a good investment and has proven to be very durable. Want a better look?  Watch the video below where I go over features, accessories, and even give you a glimpse of one of the interactive e-books!

The InnoTab also had a place for an SD card which you can put downloads, music, and pictures on. I think this is nice to an extent, but I would like to see more memory built into the tablet itself. You can buy the Vtech InnoTab Interactive Learning Tablet Amazon for $79.99.

Chex Party Mix Up Treat Exchange + Giveaway

Chex Party Mix Up Treat Exchange
Chex is one of those very versatile cereals that can be eaten for breakfast, or dressed up for a dessert or snack. This holiday season, instead of making cookies and all sorts of candies, a great idea would be to have a Chex Party Mix Up Treat Exchange. We actually went to a treat exchange this year in our neighborhood and it worked out so great. Instead of having to make 10 different treats for 20 different neighbors, we all make bulk and shared!
I’ve made Chex a few different ways and the Chex party mix website has a lot of great ideas for yummy treats. My no fail is the Chex Muddy Buddy recipe. This totally brings back memories from my childhood of times when I had it, and my boys love it as well. What’s also great is that you can include your kids in on making these because they are simple!

Chex Party Recipes
I wanted to feature one other recipe that could be fun for a Treat Exchange, but you can view more recipes of Chex Party Mix.

Chuggington Let’s Ride the Rails Playtable + Giveaway

Chuggington Train Table
Anytime we go to a toy store that has a train table, the boys are automatically drawn in. This goes for friend’s houses too. I’ve thought many a time about purchasing a train table for my boys, but wanted to get a good one that would last. They’ve always played trains on the floor. (And I wonder why they always have holes in the knees of their jeans….) Anyways, I was so excited to see that Chuggington was coming out with a train table that also doubles as a play table. To say that it felt like Christmas for my boys the day that this showed up would be an understatement. They were so excited, and all about helping daddy put it up.

About the Chuggington Train Table from Learning Curve

Build a world of Chuggington on this fun, kid-friendly table. Just the right height for little engineers to create and play for hours of fun! The Chuggington Wooden Railway features fun, kid-attractive colors, super- simple magnetic couplings, and chunky designs just right for those adorable little toddler hands.

Our Experience
The table came in all sorts of pieces, and I’ll be completely honest, I’m terrible at putting things together. I always seem to get things not in the right place and frustration gets the best of me. Luckily I have a patient husband who is great to put things together and smarter than me when it comes to following instructions. The boys were all about helping him put it together, and within a half hour, the table was up for business.
I’m not sure exactly how much this table weighs, but it feels really sturdy. Not that I can’t lift an end or move it, because that’s totally doable, but it just feels very sturdy. The boys are loving a place to have their trains. It’s a good size table and by my measurements, it’s 50″ long, 34″ wide, and stands about 17″ off the ground. With it being just over 4 feet long, I think it’s about the perfect size for train sets. We’ve had two different sets set up on it at one time. You can see all of your child’s favorite characters all around on the outside of the table. The ends have bumpers which are a great idea if you have toddlers in the house. No sharp corners which I appreciate. The top of the table has a fun design on it, and the inserts on the inside feel like they are a sturdy wood.

I’m not sure if they are particle board or wood, but they’ve already taken a beating. I found my 35 lb 4 year old up dancing on it one day, and although he knows he’s not supposed to do that now, the table stood it’s ground. ;) I’ve actually noticed that the boys will play with the trains longer if they aren’t kneeling and having to get around on the ground. The train tracks stay put better on a harder surface than on our carpeted floor, so the boys aren’t getting frustrated that tracks are falling apart. It’s also easier for them to move around the table to actually play with the trains. You can watch the video below to see our table before it is setup and what it looks like with tracks on it.

This table also doubles as a great play table. They’ve played all sorts of other toys using this table so has multiple functions.
The table gives you some room underneath for storage as well since it is 17″ off the ground. Great place for storing extra tracks. I don’t have any complaints thus far and wonder why we didn’t get a train table sooner! The table retails for $249.99, but I noticed that Amazon has it for $219.99 right now!

Where to Buy: Amazon – Chuggington Train Table or find a retailer through Learning Curve.

Crayola High-Tech Holiday Gifts + Giveaway

Crayola High-Tech
Creating and coloring are two things that my 6 year old loves to do. More often than not, he’s asking me to print coloring pages on the internet. He likes getting it off the printer, taking the time to color it, and then proudly displays his artwork. Because he loves creating and coloring, I didn’t have to even wonder if he would like one of Crayola’s new products, the Crayola Story Studio: Spiderman.

About The Crayola Story Studio

For the child who craves action and adventure, Crayola Story Studio: Spider-Man lets kids upload a photo and transform themselves into a superhero that stars with Spider-Man in personalized comic book they create and color. A free access code inside the kit unlocks the Story Studio application at Crayola.com/storystudio. Kids can choose a super power, story-line, and one of six villains to battle alongside Spider-Man in their own web-slinging adventure. When they finish their story, they can save it, share it or print and color it. The kit includes paper, glossy cover sheets for printing comic book-style covers, binding strips and 15 Twistables® colored pencils to create three complete books.

Our Experience
First off, I really like how the story studio includes your child in each adventure. We uploaded a picture of Chandler, and then tweaked it a bit. It really did look like him! We then printed the cover of his story in color, and the rest of the pages as coloring pages. Once we had all of the pages printed, we used the included plastic pieces to bind the story together. He then went to work coloring his very own book. This specific kit comes with everything you need to color the pages, 3 plastic binders, an access code to print out your book online, and the paper you need to print the book.

Crayola also has a Cars 2 and Disney Princesses Color Studio if you have a Cars or Princess fan at your house. These kits are definitely affordable at only $9.99 and are worth every penny.

Crayola iMarker
My boys play a lot on my ipad. I like finding apps that are age appropriate and fun for them.

I really had high hopes for the the iMarker from Griffin Technology, but I mostly found myself disappointed. The iMarker is basically a stylus that works with the Crayola ColorStuid HD app. It takes 1 AA battery. I downloaded the app and put the battery in. At the top there is a power button that looks like you should be able to press down, but it doesn’t press down at all. The side of the marker was lit up so I knew it was on. Once I got the app downloaded, I had such a hard time even getting the iMarker to work. I read the instructions that came with it, even looked around online to troubleshoot. The marker would work sporadically on the coloring pages which was really frustrating for my kids.  I finally realized that the marker made a small noise while it was operating.  Once I had this figured out, we were able to get it to work and it was actually very fun. You can watch the video below to get a better idea of what I’m talking about and an overview on the app.

Overall, this is a really fun app, but the iMarker needs some definite improvement.  For more great Crayola gift ideas, visit the Crayola Holiday Gift Guide.

Win It
One Babes and Kids reader will win a Crayola High-Tech Prize Pack that includes: Crayola Story Studio Comic Maker:
Spider-Man, Crayola Story Studio Fairy Tale Maker: Disney Princesses, Crayola Story Studio Adventure Maker: Disney/Pixar Cars, Crayola iMarker to use with the ColorStudio HD app for iPad, Free download of the ColorStudio HD app

Better Be Good…..The Elves Are Watching!

The Magic of Elves
I love, LOVE tradition. I think they are definitely important to have in families. I have so many wonderful traditions that I remember growing up. I think it’s only natural to want to create traditions in our own family, and that is exactly what we have done with Elf Magic. We started the elf magic tradition last year. This year, our boys were very excited to see Rowland make his appearance once again. The wonder and magic is definitely there as the boys see Rowland each morning in different and funny places. They know he’s been to the North Pole, reporting to Santa just how good they were the previous day. Sometimes Rowland brings a treat or present with him if the boys were especially good. I must say we’ve had some very well behaved boys this last week at our home.

One thing that my husband and I really want to instill in our boys is how to be grateful. No matter what they are given in life, we want them to always show gratitude. Each time Rowland brings something for the boys, Chandler writes a thank you note. He tucks it back into his sack. It’s definitely a teaching moment I’m proud of and hope that it instills gratitude in him.

Another fun addition this year are the Elfits.  Rowland doesn’t have to wear the same elfit (that’s elf for outfit! ;) ) every time he comes back from the North Pole.  Yesterday he brought a new elfit with him in his bag.  Chan was excited to dress him in his new hockey gear and exclaimed at just how cool he looked.  I have to agree.

The magic doesn’t stop at our house.  Get your travel ticket from the North Pole and learn about the excitement behind elf magic.

A special thank you to Rowland the elf for coming from the North Pole. All travel expenses were paid for, although our experience is 100% our own.

Holiday Cards From Shutterfly

Christmas Cards are something that I look forward to creating each year. This is the second year that I’ve done them with Shutterfly, and like last year, I am really pleased with the outcome. I spent well over an hour looking at their countless options and playing around with different card combinations. The process is easy and I love how easy it is to navigate Shutterfly’s website. I made up about 8 different mock cards and then got hubby’s input. When it came down to it in the end, we chose the modern pinecone design, I love it!

I ordered my cards on a Saturday night, had them by Wednesday, and off in the mail they went Thursday morning.  The finished product was wonderful, and I chose a matte finish on them.  The quality is great and I love that they come with envelopes.  One last little touch that I want to mention is that we were able to also add a picture to the back of the card and customize it how we wanted.

The options, ease and price of Shutterfly is worth recommending. That’s not all they offer.  Personalized Christmas gifts are always great and they have some pretty cute photo mugs.  It’s not too late to order your Christmas cars though! Enter code CHEER at checkout to save 30%.

We received some holiday greeting cards in exchange for this article. All opinions remain 100% my own.

I don’t know about you, but as a mom, it seems like I am constantly doing things for others, especially my kids. When was the last time you did something for you? Or better yet, what would you do if you had no kids for a day and $100 just to spend on YOU?

My ideal way to plus up my day would be with some shopping! Hubby and I headed out to do some black Friday shopping. It was so fun, and nice not to have two little boys crying or asking for everything in the store. Although there was a ton of chaos everywhere we went, it was nice to be able to talk to my husband without getting interrupted and we were able to get some much needed Christmas shopping done. Afterwards, we got some breakfast and hot chocolate which I absolutely loved. We also had some FiberPlus bars stashed in our car to help us with energy while we fought the crowds.

Chocolate Caramel FiberPlus Bar

I actually got another special treat the next day, and that was a girl’s afternoon out to see a movie. Again, it was nice to have some time away from the kids, and I honestly don’t remember the last time I’ve seen a movie without the boys or one that wasn’t animated.

FirberPlus also has other items to plus up your day, including their FiberPlus Cereals. I really like eating this cereal to jumpstart my day. I’m up at about 5:30 am and out the door by 6:30 am. Sometimes I don’t get a break until lunch, so I need something that will keep me full. The FiberPlus cereals do a great job of keeping me full, but they also taste really yummy.  The Berry Yogurt Crunch is my personal favorite.

Easiest Fudge Brownies

Holiday chocolate homemade brownies

Easy 4 Ingredient Fudge Brownies
With the holidays among us, there will be holiday parties, treats for neighbors and more. This fudge brownie recipe is one that my mom introduced me to years ago. I always get tons of compliments anywhere we go and they are SO incredibly good. You can frost them for the ultimate chocolate experience, but they are just as tasty without the frosting. They feed a large crowd since they are made in a cookie sheet, which is a plus when taking them to holiday parties. Best of all, you can have them in and out in less than a half hour!

Babydot app for iphone Review + $100 itunes GC Giveaway

Best Parenting Apps
There are all sorts of cool apps out there for download if you are an iphone user, but you don’t always hear about them. I know some that I hear about from friends or just happen to run into. Because I am a mom, I have a few parenting apps on my phone. I like using them as a resource, to connect with other moms, and to share photos and milestones. New to the market is the Babydot app. I’ve been a little app happy since getting my iphone 4s about a month ago, so I was excited to download this new app and see it’s capabilities.

About the App from Babydot

Babydot is a wonderful little app for new parents. Learn and share with other parents in a safe and secure environment. A fun and colorful app for moms and dads to be.

FEATURES:
✔ Chat with other new parents
✔ Share photos and video
✔ The latest parenting news articles
✔ Coupons for diapers and more
✔ Connect with Twitter and Facebook

My Take
First off, this app is free which definitely makes it appealing and would make me curious as a user. I spent some time exploring the different features on the app and there were things that I loved about it, and things that I thought could be improved upon. The news and videos areas are a really great idea. This is a good resource for a mom and it seems like they are being updated on a regular basis, especially the news portion. There were great ideas, articles, tips and ways to be frugal. You can also view tweets to babydot. My favorite part of the entire app was the more icon which was on the bottom right. Here you can see baby books, visit the amazon baby store, see links, photos, join the mailing list view top users, and favorite certain pages. I mentioned that you can favorite certain articles, videos and more. Here is my favorites page where I bookmark items that I particularly like. I liked this as it means that I have easy and quick reference to items that I really liked. It’s easy to favorite an article, book or video. There is a heart shaped icon on the page that you are viewing, and all you have to do is tap it. Below, you see the more page, along with my personal favorites page.

Something that I think really needs some improvement is the chat area. It seems to be one solid feed with not a lot that would engage parents. You can reply to another mom/parent, view everyone’s location on the map and see photos. I think this would be better served to have subtopics that would be more engaging for parents. For example, within the chat area, I’d like to see a sub area for introductions, baby talk, etc. Get my point? I also tried uploading a picture and the app wouldn’t let me. I was given the option to either take a photo or choose from an existing photo. When I pressed either option, it would just kick me out and not let me upload my picture.

Overall, I feel like the Babydot app is definitely very user friendly and one I would download because it is free. It’s a great resource for new parents, but the chat area definitely needs some improvements. You can download the babydot app on itunes. I did a little digging and don’t think that it is available on the android network yet, and I’m not sure if there is an app for android in the future either. Either way, it’s a fun app and I will keep it on my phone.

Winter Coat Challenge, Who Measures Up?

Quality Winter Coats for Kids
I’ve always lived in an area where there were all 4 seasons. Growing up in Idaho, our winters were bitter cold. Now living in Utah, they aren’t much better, but I have to admit that I love the snow. I don’t necessarily love driving in it, but love having the winter season. As a mom, naturally I want the best for my child, especially when it comes to cold weather conditions. My 6 year old is in kindergarten, and I want to ensure that he’s warm at recess and for outdoor play. Plus, we tend to do a lot of winter activities like sledding and playing in the snow. I need something that is going to hold up. I am definitely one that has been influenced by brands in the past. Sometimes I will buy something just because of the brand and without really doing my research. I’m here to attest that brands that you are familiar with might not always possess the quality that you would think, and vice versa. We had the opportunity to participate in a blind coat challenge for 6 year old Chandler. We received 4 brand name coats, without knowing who was sponsoring the challenge. I thought this was an incredibly unique idea, and allowed me to really compare and contrast. I was definitely up for this challenge.
A lot of us base coats on first impressions, but we really need to look deeper. As soon as we pulled the coats out of the box, I did a short video to show you our thoughts directly out of the box. This was just briefly looking at the features without paying attention to what the coat was actually made of. This video gives you a good idea of what the coats look like.

Now for the challenge. My opinions changed a bit when I really started looking at the materials, putting them to the test, and of course getting input back from my little man. I’m going to review the coats in the order of quality, features, and overall impression. They will be ranked from 1-4, with 1 being the best, and 4 was our 4th choice.

#1 Choice – Land’s End Expedition 4-in-1 Parka

The Land’s End Expedition 4-in-1 Parka coat was the total package. It was a size 5/6, and it fit Chan the best of all coats. This is probably because it was the only coat that was a 5/6, the other coats were a 6/7. He is on the small side of a size 6, so I liked this fit best. Believe it or not, I had my mom look and feel these coats along with me. I trust her opinion, she is a super outdoorsy skiing, playing kind of woman. She’s had a LOT of coats in her day and 6 kids so I trust her opinion. She first told me to look at what the coat was made of. She said that the more down it contained, the warmer it would be. I believe this after watching Chan outside with these as well.

The Land’s End coat is 80% down, which I was pleased with. Although it is the lightest of the 4 coats, it is one of the warmest. I like that it is light as Chandler still wears a 5 point harness in the car, and he’s not trying to fight with a huge bulky coat while buckling up. The material is also very nice and soft inside, and the stitching looks tight and neat. The hood size is pretty great for Chan’s head, and I like the detachable fur on the top of the hood. Overall look and feel of this coat is that it is very well made.

Now for the features. This coat is packed with tons of useable features. There are a lot of outer and inner pockets, to put lots of little boy treasures. There are side pockets that they can put their hands in and an inner pocket for other storage. The drawstring along the waist is great for snow playing, and the fleece inserts inside the cuff of the coat are genius. Your child’s thumb fits through the fleece to keep wrists warm under their gloves. No snow getting in there! I also like the reflectors on the coat. It provides for good visibility when it starts to get dark. On the inside of the coat, there is a place that you can write your child’s name, and this coat has grow-a-longs, which means that it grows with your child. Coat getting small next winter? Simply pull the seam on the inside of the sleeve and the sleeve is instantly a few inches longer. The fur on the front is detachable. I could on and on with features on this coat, but I won’t. Instead, I would tell you as a mom that I would recommend this coat, and would buy a Land’s End coat. This particular coat is priced at $159 but on sale for $111 right now, but I believe a child could get up to 3 years out of this coat because of the grow-a-longs, so it definitely makes it worth it.  If I were to pay full price on this coat, I might buy the L.L. Bean one instead.

Warmest Kid's Coat

There are only a few improvements that I would make on this coat. The next coat I am going to talk about has elastic inside the hood. I would like to see elastic or drawstrings around the hood to keep it closer to my child’s face. I would also like to see the pockets lined a little better, the ones that a child would most likely put their hands into.

#2 Choice – L.L. Bean Kids’ Baxter State Parka
Coming in at a close second was the L.L. Bean Baxter State Parka. At a size 6/7, it fit true to size. As far as warmth, this is at least 80% down, which means that it has as much as Lands End if not more. I think the coats are about equally warm, but this one might have a bit more down. It is a size 6/7 and fits true to size. The outside of the coat is a bit stiffer fabric. It has a nylon shell, which helps keep your child warm and dry. The hood also has a fur around the top which is removeable. The hood has elastic around the hood to keep it down close to your child’s head. This keeps it from falling off and is one of my favorite features. There is a name tag inside of this coat, and a drawstring on the waist. There aren’t as many pockets on or features on this coat. Only 4 pockets on the front, and one inner pocket. The cuff of the coat has fleece at the wrist and then the outside of the parka has a velcro closure. This would be good around gloves, but still might come up causing the snow and cold to get up under it.

LL Bean Kid's Coat

Improvements include more features like the Land’s End coat and more reflectivity. There is only one reflector on the back of the coat, and even it is small. I also know the outside of the coat is meant to stay dry, but I don’t like how stiff it is or how it moves. It’s also a bit bulkier than the Land’s End Coat. It retails for $109 which I mentioned above would be a selling point for me if I were to buy it versus the Land’s End Coat at full price.  I think it is very comparable to the Land’s End Parka, and although it’s got a few less features, if it came down to $50, I would buy this coat instead.

#3 Choice – J. Crew (crewcuts) journeyer parka
Right out of the packaging, the crewcuts journeyer parka was incredibly soft and the outer material felt nice. The fill is 60% down so it isn’t quite as warm as the other two coats. I love the color and style with this coat, my son really liked the way that it looked. Like the other two coats, it has a spot for your child’s name. Overall, the stitching seems to be done well and there is a drawstring at the very bottom of the coat. The hood snaps down to give your child more coverage on their face, and the fur also snaps off for washing.

J. Crew crewcuts coat

Those things needing improvement included the cuffs. There is only elastic around the wrist with nothing else to protect the wrist and snow and cold from getting in. There are big buttons up the front which aren’t reasonable for a child, they will never get done up if it’s up to my 6 year old. The pockets on the front are also a bit odd. They have a big button and then fold up before you can put anything in them. The hood seems overly huge and my child’s head was swimming in it. Feature wise, this coat didn’t offer much. This coat retails for $138. I guess it’s an ok price, but I probably would not purchase it.

crewcuts coat

#4 Choice – GAP Warmest Parka
I have to say that I was a bit disappointed in this coat. I’ve purchased the warmest coats from GAP before and have loved them. They’ve usually had some down in them and been good quality. Right out of the box, I assumed that because there was extra fleece and that it was heavy, it would be warm, however I was wrong. The coat is 100% polyester which means it most definitely is not going to be as warm as the coats made with down.  I assumed it was down at first because GAP coats I’ve had bought in the past have been down.  It looks and feels soft, but I feel that can be deceiving. The hood is fleece lined which is really warm, so I think they’ve done a good job there. There is a double cuff on the sleeve, but no sort of cinching or getting the snow out. This hood has a piece of velcro on the hood and I don’t exactly understand what it is for. As far as features go, there aren’t a lot. There is one inside pocket and four pockets on the outside. No side pocket for your child to slide their hand into, instead they have to undo the front pockets to put their hands into.

This coat is priced at $88, which is the cheapest of them all, but I think sometimes you get what you pay for. Before doing this coat challenge, I assumed that I was probably going to really like the GAP coat and while it was a good coat, I don’t think there was anything in particular that really stood out to me, and once again I’m disappointed it has no down. That’s not to say I wouldn’t buy a GAP coat again, I’d just be leery about what it is made of and the features before I were to buy it.

Overall, all of the coats had pretty easy to follow care instructions and were easy for my child to zip up. I would most likely recommend either the Land’s End or L.L. Bean coat to a friend.

The Quality Coat Review was a blind review. In order to give my unbiased opinions, I am unaware of the company that sponsored the effort. While the opinions are my own, I am being compensated through MomDot for my time.

Family Movie Night, Game of Your Life + Kinect Game Giveaway

Family Movie Night
Family Movie Night is this Friday! Snuggle up on the couch with your family Friday, December 2nd, because P&G and Walmart are back with yet another great movie, Game of Your Life. It will air on NBC at 8/7c. It’s no surprise to me that these movies continue to be released as it’s hard to find good family programming sometimes. I do have expectations for these movies now, so I’m anxious to see Game of Your Life.

Game of Your Life Synopsis

When high school gamer Zach Taylor lands a scholarship to an exclusive video game design program led by billionaire gaming icon Marcus Bentton, his future takes a promising turn…as long as he can survive the intense freshmen project that eliminates half of the class in the first three months. Teamed up with determined group leader Sara and his brilliant yet socially awkward roommates, Donald and Phillip, the four set out to involve the entire campus in a quirky new social interactive game. As the project intensifies, Zach learns that his father is in financial trouble. Distracted and desperate for help, he accepts an opportunity to work with Bentton on a secretive and suspicious side project. Zach finds himself stretched to his limits and torn between his responsibility to the team and his desire to help his father. With nowhere to else to turn, he confides in Professor Abbie Lambert and is forced to make a decision that will affect his future and the lives of everyone around him.

Moms 4 Family TV
There is also a great initiative called Moms4FamilyTV which encourages companies that create entertainment options for families. For more information on how to get involved visits Moms4FamilyTV.

Although I haven’t seen this movie yet, it’s promised to provide values that parents can appreciate their children learning like Loyalty, Responsibility, Teamwork and Trust. Those are definitely values I want to instill in my boys. So grab a bowl of popcorn and tune in to NBC on December 2nd 8/7c for the P&G/Walmart movie “Game of Your Life.”

Twice Baked Potatoes Featuring VELVEETA® and Ro*Tel®

It’s always fun to take a favorite recipe and revamp it a bit. Being a girl who grew up in the great potato state of Idaho, potatoes are something that I prepare for my family often. Since there seems to be a million ways to prepare potatoes, I thought it would be fun to add two new ingredients, VELVEETA® and Ro*Tel® The recipe is twice baked potatoes. If you haven’t ever had or made twice baked potatoes, you are seriously missing out! The idea is to bake a potato, then scoop the inside out. You add all sorts of yummy things to the potatoes, mash them, and then put them back in the oven for about 20 minutes. What results is something most heavenly. Because I like to make my recipes with less calories, I chose to use the 2% VELVEETA®. It packs all of the flavor with less fat.

Thankful for Those Uh-Oh Moments

Uh-Oh Moments
We all have those uh-oh moments with our kids. You know the kind where your child gets into a bottle of nailpolish and dumps it all over the carpet or dumps your entire bottle of favorite perfume? I’ve come to learn as a mom that I can’t get high strung and upset in those moments. Sure, I want my child to understand that they can’t get into things that they aren’t supposed to, but I also know that making a huge deal out of it isn’t going to make it better. This last weekend, we were visiting my inlaws and my parents. Right before we were supposed to leave, I found my 3 year old swimming in a pile of cards.

He had dumped a couple of games, and there were thousands of cards. It took 4 adults and 2 kids over 20 minutes to clean it all up. But my first reaction? Grab the camera. :) Of course he had to help clean up, and I told him why he couldn’t do that. Looking at this uh-oh moment, I was grateful. Grateful that I can take a step back and laugh. Grateful that I have two little boys that can make messes. And then I was reminded of this:

Looking back on this video, it was close to 4 years ago. We were packing to move out of an apartment, and I left a Sharpie in plain sight of a two year old. What commenced was some coloring, followed by lots of Uh-ohs from his little two year old lips, and a lot of scrubbing with a magic eraser. Looking back on that moment, I’m glad I grabbed the camera. I’m glad that I showed him consequences to his actions, but that I was able to do it in a loving way. We all have uh-ohs in our lives whether big or small. The fact of the matter is, will you blow things out of proportion, or will you step back and chuckle at your mistakes when it’s all said and done?

Although we have those uh-oh moments in our lives, we also need to be able to recognize the good that comes our way. The other day I opened an e-mail from the Fairy Hobmother. Yes, I said Hobmother. She granted a wish that I made on another blog and paid me a visit. In my inbox, an Amazon gift card. Want the Fairy Hobmother to come visit you? All you have to do is tell me an uh-oh moment from either you or your child and make a wish. It could be for a pile of candy, a Samsung refrigerator….or a visit from the Fairy Hobmother. :)

Thank you to the Fairy Hobmother for visiting this blog. All uh-oh moments remain 100% mine.

Carmex Skin Care Review + Giveaway

Healing Dry Skin
I’ve always lived in very dry climates. Growing up in Idaho, I battled dry skin my whole life. Now we live in Utah, and it’s no different. The winter is an especially hard time as it seems like it gets even dryer. My boys have very dry skin as well, so it’s important that we all moisturize daily. I have a pretty good habit to use lotion or cream after I get out of the shower everyday, and it definitely helps. I’m always open to using new and different products for moisturizing. As part of the Carmex Blog Squad, I was able to try out a new line of Carmex Skin Care products, new to the market. I already like and use Carmex products on my lips so I definitely had expectations of the new skin line.

About the Skin Line from Carmex
The Carmex Skin Care Line is here with a new solution to heal, soothe and moisturize your dry skin. Our Healing Lotion and Healing Cream both have a non-greasy feel with a light, pleasant scent. Rich healing ingredients, including Aloe and Vitamin E, nourish and moisturize skin.

My Experience
On the front of the packaging, it says that the lotion and cream are non greasy with a pleasant scent. Check and check. I definitely agree that they are both non greasy. They absorb into the skin and leave a nice soft feel on your skin. I do prefer the cream to the lotion, just because it is thicker and I feel like it moisturizes a little bit better. The scent is also nice. It has a hint of the carmex smell which I actually really like. The packaging is also nice, the tubes are soft enough and the product comes out easily. I do prefer a pump for home, but Carmex does offer a pump product as well.
I’m also constantly washing and sanitizing my hands while at clinical. This is important as I am dealing directly in patient care. However, since I have such dry skin, I’ve had problems with my hands cracking. Carmex has small tubes that I can carry in my scrubs. I used them for a week and noticed a difference in my hands. Some lotions continue to moisturize even after you wash your hands. I do notice that this is a con with the Carmex lotion. My hands feel extremely dry like all of the moisturizer is washed off, so I’m constantly applying it during the day.

Where to Buy: Click here for a list of retailers.

Win It
One Babes and Kids reader will win a Carmex Skin Care Prize Pack that includes: # 1 Carmex Healing Lotion, 1 Carmex Healing Cream, 1 Travel size Carmex Healing Lotion, 1 Travel size Carmex Healing Cream

Yo Gabba Gabba Live!

We went to Yo Gabba Gabba Live! again this year. I think the boys both liked it a ton more. Instead of being at The E Center, it was at Kingsbury Hall. We were only about 15 rows back, so we were a lot closer to the stage. I think that helped the boys get into it a lot more. Plus, they’ve been watching it on Netflix so they knew the songs and the characters a lot better. They sang, danced, and smiled to their heart’s content. #VitaminD, Are You Getting Enough?

Vitamin D
I was talking with a friend a few weeks ago, and we got on the subject of vitamins. Vitamins and health are definitely something that are important to me. How you treat your body now will show up later in life. We both agreed that vitamins are the cheapest insurance that you can buy. Back in October, I had asked Nature Made’s registered dietician what supplements every woman should be taking. Among those that she recommended, Vitamin D. Many adults are lacking in their intake of vitamin D, and many may not know that Vitamin D supports the absorption of calcium. Without it, your bones might not be getting the calcium they need. 40% of Americans over 50 are Vitamin D deficient. What else does Vitamin D do?

  • Supports bone, teeth and immune health.
  • Ensures healthy levels of Vitamin D in your body may promote heart health.
  • Vitamin D comes in two forms: Vitamin D2, and Vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is the most effective for maintaining adequate levels of Vitamin D in the body.

A few days ago, we went to Walmart to check out their Nature Made Vitamin D. Before going, we made a list of other items that we needed to pick up while there. Because Vitamin D is something that I use and buy on a regular basis at Walmart, I knew exactly where to go to get it.

We picked up other things that we needed in our shopping trip including some groceries. Our overall shopping experience was great as I was familiar with our store and knew where to find it. They were stocked in everything that I needed as well, which I appreciate.

Below are the supplements that I take on a regular basis. (Minus the vitamin C that I forgot to take a picture of!) As I said at the first, I believe that vitamins are the cheapest insurance that you can buy for yourself. Thinking that many Americans are deficient in Vitamin D, I’d rather be safe than sorry! To learn more about my shopping experience, you can see my Google+ Story about Vitamin D.

VTech Three Handset Connect to CELL Review

Staying Connected
Being connected is really important to me. I got my first cell phone my Freshman year of college and have always been connected since. When hubby and I got married, we opted to not have a land line and just stick with our cell phones. This has actually worked really well for us, and saved us some money not having a land line. However, when I’m at home I miss a lot of calls. Chances are that unless I’m in the same room or on the same floor as my cell phone, I don’t hear it. My mom has told me a time or two that I never pick up my phone and half the reason is because I can’t hear it. VTech has a solution to my problem with their DS6421-3 model which is a three handset connect to CELL answering system.

VTech DS6421-3

About the phone from VTech (Amazon)

The VTech DS6421-3 phone system merges cellular and landline technology. It comes with three handsets, Connect to Cell technology, a digital answering system and handset speakerphones. With Connect to Cell, you can make and receive cell phone calls with the comfort of your VTech cordless handset. No more mad dashes for the misplaced cell phone at home. DECT 6.0 Digital technology delivers long range and also prevents wireless networks and other electronic devices from interfering with conversations.

Thanks to HD Audio, you’ll enjoy fuller and clearer sound too. Digital security ensures your calls are digitized and encrypted, making it nearly impossible for someone to eavesdrop. Plus, Push-to-Talk intercom, call-transfer and conference capabilities streamline in-home communication, eliminating disruptive shouting through the home. With 14 minutes of recording time, the digital answering system answers calls when you can’t. The VTech DS6421-3 can expand up to 12 handsets using only one phone jack.

Our Experience
The experience with this phone so far has been great. This review is limited as we were not able to test it out with a land line, but use it on a daily basis with our cell phones. To simplify how it works with your cell phone, watch my video below.

It was really simple to pair the VTech with my cell phone and took only about 20 seconds to do. You can also transfer your contacts list so that you have them in the VTech phone. You can have up to 4 cell phones paired with the connect to cell phone, but only 2 can be active at one time. Your handset will also tell you which phone is ringing when paired with a cell phone. So, for example, if my husband and I both have cell phones paired with the handset, you will be able to see which phone is ringing when you look down at the vtech phone. The audio on the phone is very clear. We haven’t experienced any static or fuzziness while talking on it. It is energy start compliant as well. The phones themselves are very thin and lightweight, and the bar style is easy to hold. There are so many other cool features, visit Vtech to learn more. This would definitely be a great Christmas present for someone who has just about everything because it’s innovative and really useful at the same time.
Speaking of the holidays, VTech did a survey on the holidays and phone calling, and here were a few interesting tidbits from it:

• 45% of respondents said a phone call to catch up with them is the best present a distant friend or family could give them for the holidays; ranked highest among 55+ at 60%; dads ranked it at 47% and moms at 35%. Social media interaction ranked last at 5%

• Due to the hectic nature of the holidays, 37% of respondents said the best way to stay connected with friends and family during the busiest time of the year was via phone; ranked highest among Div/Sep/Wid at 47%; moms ranked it at 36%, dads at 40%. Having one on one talks ranked the lowest at 7%

Price: $99.99, but Amazon has it on sale for $78 right now
