Excursion Photography (Utah, Idaho) + Giveaway

I remember the first time we got a family photo after Chandler was born. He was 3 months old, and I went to good old JcPenney. It was cheap. That’s about all there is to that experience. I didn’t love it to say the least. I felt like the photographer was rushing us, got frustrated when Chan started to fuss, and pressured us into trying to buy a lot of what we didn’t want. Flash forward about 9 months. Same thing. Feeling like we had no choice, we headed into JcPenney again. There were other photographers that we’d looked into, but couldn’t afford the $200-$300 sitting fee plus pictures.

Excursion Photography is your source for professional, affordable photography. Serving Southeast Idaho and Northern Utah (Salt Lake Area), you get great photos with the personal touch and time.

Sitting fees start at just $55 for newborns, $65 for 1-3 children, and $95 for a family of up to 6.  It’s a great resource for those wanting a personal touch and time without breaking the bank.

Idaho Falls Child Photographer

Natalie is the photographer behind Excursion photographer. She specializes in everything from newborns and families, to seniors and weddings.  Aren’t her photos beautiful?!
What’s really nice is that you get all of the photos on a cd, with copyright release which allows you to print as many photos as your heart desires.

Idaho Falls Newborn Photographer

It’s been almost a year since we’ve had family pictures, and we’re definitely due. Natalie will be taking our pictures, and I’m excited to share them with you when we get them done!

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides + Giveaway

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Next Friday, on May 20th, get ready for a new Pirates movie to hit theaters. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will be showing, starting that day! If this film is anything like the other Pirates Movies, it’s sure to be a good one. Action packed, and lots of Johnny Depp, which I’m excited about. Hubby and I will be attending a screening come Monday and will get a peek at the movie before it comes out in theaters. I couldn’t be more excited!

Pirates 4, Johnny Depp Movie Poster

For you pirates fans, here is a brief synopsis of the movie:

Produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Rob Marshall, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” captures the fun, adventure and humor that ignited the hit franchise—this time in Disney Digital 3D™. Johnny Depp returns to his iconic role of Captain Jack Sparrow in an action-packed adventure. Crossing paths with the enigmatic Angelica (Penélope Cruz), he’s not sure if it’s love—or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the “Queen Anne’s Revenge,” the ship of the legendary pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know whom to fear more: Blackbeard or Angelica, with whom he shares a mysterious past. The international cast includes franchise vets Geoffrey Rush as the vengeful Captain Hector Barbossa and Kevin R. McNally as Captain Jack’s longtime comrade Joshamee Gibbs, plus Sam Claflin as a stalwart missionary and Astrid Bergès-Frisbey as a mysterious mermaid.

This film, like all of the other Pirates film is rated PG-13. For more Pirates action, but sure to:

Subway Orchard Chicken Salad
Have you tried the new Orchard Chicken Salad Sandwich from Subway? If you haven’t, I highly encourage you to. It’s actually the sub of the month, and you can snag a foot long for only $5 during May. I’ve tried in a few different occasions, and it’s definitely yummy! I opt to put everything on it, minus olives, with no other dressings or sauces. It’s really good! At only 8 grams of fat and 376 calories, it’s a sure win.
Our family actually eats out more now than we usually do. I think it’s a combination of going to school, both hubby and I working, and having 2 kids and a house to take care of as well. There’s a lot of nights that I just don’t want to cook. Luckily for me, there are healthy choices when we want to eat out, and maybe that’s why we choose Subway a lot. With their $5 foot long subs, our whole family eats for $10. Plus, it’s teaching my kids healthy habits when we choose a fresh sandwich over the burger.

Subway Twitness Party Tonight!
Sometimes the best way to reach our fitness goals and learn about others is to discuss them. Join Subway tonight at 8 pm Eastern, 7 pm Central time for a “Twitness Party.” It will take place on twitter, using the hashtag #commit2fit. It will take place during the Biggest Loser showing, which I’m excited for. Down to the final 5! Have you been watching and who is your favorite? Monster High Walkie Talkies For Girls + Giveaway

Written by Avry, guest reviewer

Monster High
One day last summer while at the store, my daughter and I  noticed a lady stocking the shelves with new toy/doll items.  They happened to be Monster High dolls. The lady proceeded to tell us that they were the new hot item, so all three girls got Monster High Dolls for their birthdays last year.

My girls recently had the opportunity to try out the new Monster High Walkie Talkies! What fun it has been watching my girls hide in places with the walkie talkies and give each other hints as to where they are at through the walkie talkies.

These have been a hit at my house and I have even told the girls I was going to place one under their pillows at night then just use the walkie talkie to wake them up in the morning instead of coming upstairs!

Pros: These will keep your kids occupied for hours. There is a nice headset that plugs into the child’s ear so that you don’t have to hear the whole conversation throughout the house. I was surprised at how far the frequency could go. There is a fun light in the antenna for those dark nights of secretly talking to your sister in the other room, and a fun mirror on the inside so you can always see who is behind you! My girls are begging me to purchase another set for when their friends are over because they are not wanting to take turns! These have been a HUGE hit in my house.

Walkie Talkies for Girls

Cons: Don’t expect these to be heavy duty walkie talkies as they are made for kids. Kids don’t care if it is top of the line, all they care about is having fun! So if not taken care of they could break easily. However, there is a 1 year manufacturer warranty on them if anything, besides kids being rough, happens to them!

Price: $19.99

Where to Buy: Mattel

One Babes and Kids reader will win a set of Monster High Walkie Talkies

Buying a Treadmill – Tips on What to Look for

Treadmill Tips
Over the last year, I’ve done a lot of research on treadmills, and have looked high and low for treadmill tips. This is simply because for the most part I’ve been a seasonal runner. I got into running in March of last year, ran my first half in June, and my first marathon in September. When it started to get cold, I stopped running. I’m about a 10 minute drive from my nearest gym, and because it doesn’t have much competition, the rates are quite high so I’ve never joined. I also don’t have child care for my kids if I were to run at the gym, so that’s another concern. I also have had the suggestion from others to just run in the cold, but if it’s too cold, I cough for at least an hour after a run which can’t be great for my lungs. Another reason that I’ve looked for a treadmill? I work nights and sometimes don’t get out to run in the summer until mid afternoon. By this time it’s so hot that I only make it a mile or two before I’m dripping in sweat and have to come back.

Treadmill Running

With my brother after running a marathon last September

Now that you know my reasoning for wanting to do some treadmill running, I’m going to give some treadmill tips on what you should look for when buying.
These are just my opinions after researching, trying on and running on some treadmills, etc.

Treadmill Buying Tips

Brand: The very first thing that I looked at were brands. I searched different brands and got a feel for the consumer reports. By doing this, I was able to weed out some treadmill companies that I wasn’t interested in. If I found a lot of complaints online, or their equipment didn’t get the greatest of reviews, out the door.

Price: Decide what your price range is. I’m a firm believer that you get what you pay for in some circumstances. I went to a few different stores to get a feel for some inexpensive treadmills and I wasn’t impressed. for $500-1000, you can get a treadmill that you can run on, but I noticed a bit of shaking back and forth and slipping of the belt when I’d start running. If it’s doing that to begin with, it’s only going to get worse.  Compare that with a treadmill that’s going to cost you a couple thousand or so, and it’s a difference of night and day.

Motor Size: This is one that I wasn’t extremely familiar with until a friend pointed out to me. Upon doing some research, I realized that if you are serious about treadmill running, you need a motor of at least 2.8. The higher the motor, the bigger that it is, and looking at reviews, they generally last the wear and tear a bit longer.

Treadmill Running

Belt Length: The overall belt length was a concern for me because I’m tall. Being 5’9″, I feel like I need a longer belt to run on, since my stride is naturally longer. I’ve seen belts that are 50″ long or less. I’d literally feel like I was falling off the belt, so another criteria for me is that it be 55″ long or longer. If you have a shorter stride or aren’t quiet as tall, you might be ok with a shorter belt.

Features: Make sure you outline some of the features you want in a treadmill before buying. This will narrow it down a lot faster. Do you want it to incline, decline? Are there a certain amount of users you want to be able to use on the treadmill? How many workouts or presets do you want? Is there a certain speed you need it to go to? What about a fan, cup holder, heart rate monitor, emergency, stop, handle bars, speakers? More features to think about than you thought, right?

Warranty: What type of a warranty does the treadmill have? I’ve noticed companies that only offer a 10 year, and some that offer a lifetime warranty. For me, if I’m going to make a big investment, I want it to have a good long warranty.

Size: Some may worry about the size and want a treadmill that folds up. If you do want one that folds, make sure you see how much it folds up before you buy. I’ve seen treadmills that really don’t save that much room when folded up. Personally, it doesn’t matter to me if a treadmill folds as we have a designated space for it. It’s probably on the last of my worry list when buying a treadmill. Make sure you have space for one and measure beforehand.

These are just a few things that I thought were important criteria when looking for a treadmill. I suggest you do some research if you are in the market for one, and really look at all of the Pros and Cons.
I’m going to be trying out a new treadmill over the year to do some treadmill running on. I still have to pick a race to train for, etc, but it’s going to be great being able to train in my home when needed. I’m curious if you have a treadmill. If so, what do you like about it and what don’t you?

I am receiving a sample treadmill to facilitate my running journey throughout the year. All opinions remain 100% my own, and were not influenced by compensation.

Uncle Milton’s Tarantula Planet Review + Giveaway

Tarantula Planet
I’m as girly as you can get. I love makeup and clothes, and definitely hate bugs, spiders, and all things that creep. So naturally I’ve been blessed with boys. Ha! Although I still don’t care for anything that crawls or slithers, if it’s just a toy, I’m ok with it. Especially since my boys are really into bugs. Sometimes the simple toys are the ones that they really like the most. Uncle Milton’s Tarantula planet toys are ones that are pretty simple in concept but can give hours of play.

About Tarantula Planet:

Building on the success of its R/C Tarantula, the line features sound activated tarantula’s with looks all their own! Simply clap and watch as these creepy crawlin’ pets, with light-up eyes, scurry across any flat, smooth surface with real spider-like movement. Tarantulas include: Tango “The Solider,” Red Beard “The Pirate,” Octane “The Racer” and Spike “The Rocker.” While each Tarantula has a unique look and personality, they have one thing in common…they love applause! The more you clap for them the more they run! Plus there is no need for a remote control! Tarantula Planet Tarantulas are sold individually, retail for about $14.99 and are age rated for 5 years and up.

The Review
We received Red Beard the Pirate, Tango the Soldier, and the Crate. When I pulled these from the box, hubby insisted that we hide them and have them scurry out at the boys.  I knew Chan would love it. I wasn’t so sure about Rowan. Because these are sound activated, you make noise and they scurry across the floor. I decided to go along with my husband’s plan. We got everything out of the packaging and started prepping.

The creepy crate is a place that the Spiders can hide. It latches on the top, and then has a button on the side that springs the door open. I had the hardest time getting this crate to stay together. I became extremely frustrated at one point, but I finally got it together after about 20 minutes. The spiders were ready to go out of the packaging. Between their beady red eyes, the noise they make, and the way they moved, I admit they were a bit creepy. We got everything all set up, and well – here is how it went down….

Rowan didn’t like it, as you can easily see. Both of their reactions were priceless. I can’t even begin to count the amount of time they have spent playing with these Tarantulas. Once Rowan warmed up to the idea, he really liked them, but for a few days he wanted nothing to do with them. Chan has loved them from day one. The crate has problems staying together, and I’m not sure if it is our crate, or my boys are too rough with it. It is made up of 6 pieces, and it doesn’t seem like it’s ever fit quite right. I followed the instructions and everything. The Spiders definitely make up for crate because they’ve been such a hit, but I’m not so sure I would recommend the crate.
Overall, the Tarantulas are so much fun, fairly inexpensive, and create hours of fun.

Price: $9.99 for the Tarantulas, $12.95 for the crate.

Pampers Celebrates 50 Years of Miracles

I love Pampers. I love what they stand for, the product they make, and what they do for others. It’s one brand that I’ve been loyal to with my boys, and will continue to be loyal to as our family continues to grow over the years. Pampers is celebrating 50 years of Miracles! Isn’t that amazing? This great brand has just launched a Miracle Mission; read below to learn more.

Little Miracle Mission campaign
– a program that delivers acts of kindness to miracles and their families while encouraging parents to support others, by delivering a giant act of support.

Consumers can easily participate in the Miracles Missions programs, and support little miracles across the country, by logging on to Pampers Facebook page. Pampers is also asking consumers to pay it forward by participating in the first Little Miracle Mission- to congratulate and offer support to an expectant mother with a gift or surprise gesture. Once more than 1,500 consumers pledge that they have achieved this mission, Pampers will respond by giving baby showers to expectant mothers nationwide just in time for Mother’s Day. Pampers will issue different missions throughout the entire year to celebrate all aspects of parenthood, and with the help of parents, family and friends, they hope to touch the lives of every baby born in the next year. I just checked out Pamper’s Facebook page, and as of now, 4664 people have pledged to help with this mission. I’d love to see them reach 5000, and you can pledge to do your own little Miracle Mission, just make sure you do it on Pampers Facebook Page (Miracle Missions Tab) within the next 6 days!!

I can’t help but think of my own little miracles and what joy they’ve brought to my life. I was looking over some home videos this last week, and found this one of Chandler almost 4 years ago. Running around in a Pampers diaper, giggling without a care in the world.  (The video is a little dark, but the giggles are still contagious. :) )

I couldn’t help but think of how incredibly blessed I’ve been. Our family has never had to go hungry, my boys have always been clean, clothed, and diapered. They have a warm home and a roof over their heads. There are so many less fortunate than us that don’t have the necessities that they need. I am going to be partnering with Pampers to provide a random act of kindness to my community. I’ve chosen our local homeless shelter. I was looking over a list of items that they need for infants and toddlers and it just about breaks my heart. I am going to put together necessity packs, and also get them a few larger items in hopes that some families and children will find relief in having these items. I’m so excited to be a part of this program and couldn’t be prouder to be an ambassador for Pampers. Now that I’m feeling emotional about the whole thing, it’s time to do some good. Watch for an update on my random act of kindness.

Freshen Up With Carefree + Giveaway

Freshen Up
I’m on the go a lot. Between a very busy schedule, it’s important to me to always have things packed that will keep me fresh. At any given time you will find in my purse: Solid perfume, breath mints or gum, lip gloss, a small hair brush, my phone/wallet,  and snacks for my boys.  The small things like perfume and gloss help me freshen up and keep going. I also carry feminine products with me in a small cosmetic bag, but I’ve never really considered them in keeping me fresh. Necessities, yes, but not necessarily on my freshen up list. Sometimes I wish I didn’t have to have them with me all of the time, but then again that’s just part of being a woman.

Carefree has developed a new product that I think is safe to put on my freshen up list. Their new Acti-Fresh liners not only protect, but keep you feeling fresh as well. That’s pretty nice, especially when you can feel self conscious about not feeling fresh at all times.
Carefree’s new liners are tiny and discrete and work well. I like that they are individually packaged as not all liners you buy are. Definitely something I’m going to keep carrying with me. And as a nice little FYI, they are now 40% thinner, 2x as absorbent, and keep you fresh for up to 8 hours. Who knew? Now you do.Free Carefree Liner Sample

Get Mom Chocolate for Mother’s Day From Shari’s Berries (Giveaway)

Mothers Day Chocolate Gift Ideas
Mother’s Day is next week! If you are still looking for gift ideas, and your mom likes chocolates or consumables, then Shari’s Berries would be an excellent pick. I spent well over a half hour on their website a few weeks ago, drooling over the fabulous chocolate covered strawberries, and other sweet treats. After much consideration, I decided to go for some cupcakes, an 8 count of chocolate and Red Velvet cupcakes. Don’t they look incredible?

Chocolate Cupcakes Mothers Day Gift

I was interested to see how fresh they would taste when they arrived, and if they would look like they are pictured on the website. I’ve ordered consumable products in the past online that aren’t near as nice as they appear online, and that can definitely be disappointing.  The cupcakes arrived on a day that I wouldn’t be home until late.  Hubby and the boys discovered them and I told them they could have one, but not to devour them all, which I’m sure they would have.  Once home, I hid them up on the fridge, but 3 year old Rowan somehow found them and took it upon himself to eat the last Red Velvet Cupcake.  I had a bite of it, and it was incredible.  Moist, rich, and the frosting was perfect.  Plus, there was frosting inside each of the cupcakes.  I definitely appreciated this as it seems like sometimes cupcakes can get dry when all you have is the frosting on top.  The chocolate, was just as delicious and looks just like it did on their website as you can see below.

So be sure to check out Shari’s Berries for these delicious cupcakes, Mothers Day Chocolate Covered Strawberries, and other Chocolate Gift Ideas for mom.

Green Lantern Toys by Mattel Review

Mattel’s Green Lantern Toys:  Colossal Cannon & Isamot Kol
I still recall the best days of my life playing with action figures yet finding myself subject to my older brother.  The toys I got to play with were sanctioned by his approval.  I learned to just accepted that fact.  Green Lantern for example, was one of those awesome action figures off-limits (along w/ Flash).   Approval was granted for me to play with the same old superheroes: Superman, Batman, Aquaman… which only made Green Lantern that much better (especially because I couldn’t touch it).  It is with that coveted childhood memory that I now present to you an ode to the Green Lantern I always wanted from childhood, and whom my two boys now have my approval to enjoy.  This video below captures Mattel’s new toys: Colossal Cannon & the Green Lantern Power Ring (included w/ Isamot Kol action figure).

Mattel’s Colossal Cannon:

This gun was a major source of tears between my two boys as they argued about who rightfully could try it out first.  I had to re-shoot video on a few occasions to avoid the classic meltdown we enjoy on a daily basis. Finally they agreed to take turns.   This gun is a blast!  Both my 3 year old and 5 year old LOVED IT.  The design is very creatively constructed.  To add discs, you open up a hatch at the top to drop the discs in.  The child then inserts their hand to grasp a handle inside.  As they squeeze the trigger, 10 green, translucent discs are shot out with a range of about 20 feet.  During each squeeze of the trigger it lights up, makes blasting noises, and the body rotates – creating quite the scene of excitement.  The video above has  away of illustrating what my boys are thinking about as they run around the house shooting discs.  Very exciting display for these kids.

Pros: Design is creative, the body is solid – able to withstand super-hero style of play.  I really enjoyed the structure generally and how kids actually insert their hand inside the body to launch the discs.  One pro that was a big plus for me:  battery-life is thoughtfully conserved.  I can’t stand toys that require you to turn off power to avoid draining the battery.  In addition to that point, there is no consistent humming of airflow – like so many foam discs that shoot by air.  Not only are those type of guns noisy – but you can feel the pain of battery life draining.  The Colossal Cannon on the other hand remains silent in between launching discs.  The battery is only used when a child pulls the trigger – then it quickly shuts off in between usage.  Brilliant toy gun.

Mattel's Colossal Cannon for Green Lantern

Cons: The targeting “scope” feels out of position.  My little boys would clumsily try to aim in an awkward stance to use it.  I also really felt concerned about the 10 discs that are included, being lost.  As they were first shot out – I remember darting my eyes around the room trying to locate all 10 for my boys to pick-up.  This gun can shoot the discs pretty fast.  For that reason, I would ask the boys to just shoot at a controlled area:  the wall – to avoid losing the discs.  You can guess how that idea was accepted.  I did have a thought that would be excellent to resolve this somewhat… Why not have those discs glow in the dark?  That could make it much easier to find them.

Price: $29.99

Green Lantern Action Figure: Isamot Kol:

I haven’t seen the movie and I am unfamiliar with this character- but that doesn’t change the fact that my 5 year old really enjoyed it.  Isamot Kol seemed to fit right in with Batman and Robin – as a bad guy.  A great addition to this set was a trap included with the character.  Isamot Kol slips the end of the trap onto his hand and the jaws easily open and close to snag his prey.  That was a very fun feature for my boys – again, perfect role for a bad guy with their other action figures.  That role may change once they see the movie.  The biggest hit with this set was the power ring.  I can’t say enough about it.  While still packaged: my 5 year old realized what that ring was all about and really started jumping around the room.  You could see the lights go on as he realized that he would now have the “ring of the power of God.”  – well, close enough.  Perhaps it completes the power of his CTR ring (as seen in the video above).

Isamot Kol by mattel

Pros: Great action figure!  Excellent design – the trap is a unique addtion w/ functional jaws.  It naturally snaps apart to avoid serious breaking.  The ring is extra large – over the top awesome, but fits on a tiny finger well.  The fact that the ring isn’t included separately is a smart move,  as my boy decides to ask for more action figures to complete the set – I’m sure he’ll never get tired of more power rings.

Cons: The functionality of his arms are a little odd – they don’t seem to rotate/bend naturally significantly limiting movement.  Otherwise it is a great action figure!

Price: $8.99

Mothers Day Gifts from ProFlowers + $50 Gift Card Giveaway

Mothers Day Gifts
My mom is pretty special. I think it’s awesome that I have a day to remember and celebrate her. Because of my mom, I am the person and the mom that I am today. She’s a pretty amazing woman. We talk multiple times a week and see each other quite frequently even though we live in different states. What better way to say I love you than with a simple act of kindness or an unexpected gift. ProFlowers has a great selection from Mothers Day flowers to consumables, just for mom.

My Experience
This last week, I got to try out ProFlowers’ Service to see if we liked it or not. There are a lot of different choices which include flowers of course and other gifts as well. Upon browsing through the flowers, one that caught my eye was the Azalea Bonsai plant for mothers day.  Of course, it’s a plant as well, but it makes sense to me to get a plant so that mom can enjoy it for months to come. Isn’t it pretty?

Although I love flowers, what hits the spot for me is consumables. Hubby knows that I’d rather have a box of chocolate or sweets any day versus flowers. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy flowers, I just love sweets.  The product that I chose was Two Sweet Celebrations.  Although it is unavailable right now, it includes a Spring/Easter type gift basket that is similar to the Classic Spring Basket, and a Half Dozen Chocolate Dipped Strawberries.

The presentation was really nice when it arrived. I’ve only gotten the first part, the Spring Basket, but it included 2 pears, 2 Granny Smith Apples,  2 Easter cookies, chocolate marshmallows, Easter candy corn, caramel corn, and chocolate eggs.

It also came in an Easter Crate we you can reuse. We are storing our bread in ours at the top of our refrigerator now. The pears were absolutely fantastic, the cookies were fresh, and over all it was a nice mix of consumables. I definitely can’t wait until I get the chocolate covered strawberries, I’m sure they will be fantastic as well. This two pack retailed under $50, but since it is unavailable, there are also lots of other choices to fit everyone’s budget.

Build Imagination With Green Town Toys (Review + Giveaway)

Toys for the Imagination
Imagination is an important part of a child’s play. It leads them to be inspired, create, and to be carefree. It brings out a creative side of a child which they can carry with them throughout their life. I think my husband must have had a wild imagination when he was younger. I say that because I see him interact with our boys, and see how he helps them imagine. I also see it in his career. He’s always thinking up big ideas, acting on them, and then carrying them out. Pretty amazing. Green Town Toys knows and understands how important imaginative play is for children.

Pirate Ship Play Structure

About Green Town Toys:

Green Town Toys is a market leader in innovative and eco-friendly corrugated products. Our mission is to design and manufacture children’s products that inspire imagination, creativity, and fun. Our extensive in-house manufacturing capabilities allow us to ensure prompt delivery, competitive pricing, and unparalleled customer service. In addition, we take the utmost pride in offering sustainable products that are designed and manufactured right here in the U.S.A.

Pros: We were excited to be able to try out the Jolly Roger. Before we even opened the package, I made sure that we had a space large enough to host this fun ship. Green Town Toys gives sizes in the product description of their website, which I appreciate. That way, there wasn’t any surprise when we put it together as to how big it would be. I already knew it was going to be 53″ from front to back, and 27″ wide. When I told the boys that we had gotten a pirate ship in the mail, they were naturally very excited and inquisitive. Here’s how everything looked right out of the box:

Green Town Toys

I was relieved to see there there were minimal pieces and instructions were also included. Having 1 page of clear concise instructions with pictures was extremely helpful. I’m normally not the one to put things together, I usually designate my husband, but I felt confident that this wouldn’t be too hard.

Here’s a few pictures of our process in getting it up. From start to finish, it took me just over 15 minutes. Not bad for a mom who’s not too good at putting things together. The boys had fun hiding inside the ship while it was in the process of going up.

Green Town Toys

Once up, it provided a lot of imaginative play. Chan has a particular animated show that he likes about pirates. They played pretending they were part of the characters in this show, along with bandanas, eye patches, and a sword we dug out of the toy chest. As a mom, it’s fun to sit back and watch your children imagine and play. You know it’s beneficial to them and they are having fun at the same time.

This product is well made, can withstand a lot, and there are other varieties you can choose from like The Citadel and The Moon Roof Funhouse.

Cons: Because the sails have a cool cutout design, if you don’t bend them right in the middle before inserting them, they can bend where the cutout design is and not fit quite right. The first sail that I put in, I just tried to put it in the slots without giving it slight bend in the middle first. It really had a hard time staying in. The second sail, I bowed out in the middle and then put it in, and it it fit perfectly.

There’s also a couple parts on the top of the ship that you need to bend down. It would be nice for these areas to have more of a groove so that they bend a little easier. The last thing I had a tiny bit of a problem with when putting it together was getting the masts down through the holes. It was a tight fit and it really needs to be, but this is where another set of hands would have been helpful to guide the masts down in. We also have 10 foot ceilings, and I almost had to bend the mast in the middle to get it up, over, and down into the boat. It might have been helpful to turn the boat on the side, but don’t know since that’s not how I put it together. Since these are all pretty minor cons, I think it would be helpful to add a “tips” sheet inside with the instructions on ways that it would be a bit easier to put together. (Bending the sail, turning boat on side to get in masts, or having a higher ceiling, and having a 2nd pair of hands to put the mast down in.)

Overall, the Jolly Roger is a great eco friendly cardboard play structure. It’s held up to some pretty rough pirates the last few weeks. :)

Change is constantly happening around us, and that includes our world and National Parks as well. Growing up, and with my family now, I have great memories. April is Earth Month + Giveaway

Happy Earth Month
Are you aware of how much water you are using each day? How much garbage you throw away? If you haven’t been in the past, now is a great time to make a few changes to help our earth. April is Earth Month and I’ve taken a step back to look at what I am doing right and what ways that I could improve. Target and Proctor & Gamble have partnered with a few great ideas that can help celebrate our Earth this month. A couple of these ideas I had already implemented, so I was proud to know that even if it were a small part, I am helping.

  • Tide Coldwater: This specific detergent is made to work with your clothing in cold water. I took a laundry challenge last summer and have been washing most of my clothing, bedding in cold, unless I’m running a sanitize cycle. I honestly haven’t noticed too much of a difference washing in all cold. My clothes still get very clean, Tide Coldwater works great, and I know I am saving energy.
  • Diapers: Diapers have been ongoing in our home for 5 1/2 years now. I’ve always used Pampers, but specifically use the Pampers Cruisers. Since I don’t cloth diaper, they are a really smart choice. They made with 10% less material than the leading diaper, are super soft, prevent leaks and blowouts, and create less waste. Win, win situation for everyone!
  • Pur Filtered Water: I used to buy a TON of bottled water. I don’t care for the taste of the water here since I grew up on well water, so I have to have it filtered. I used to buy 2 24 packs of water a month. That’s a lot of waste for our little family. We started using a filtering pitcher about a year ago and have saved so much money and waste. If you were to simply install a Pur Faucet Filter, or invest in a Pur pitcher, you would save up to $600 per year, not to mention all of the waste that is kept off our earth.

A few more ideas that I had on my own:
Turn the water off while brushing your teeth. This saves a lot of water and is a simple habit.
Getting stuffy in your house this Spring? Open a window instead of turning on the air conditioning. The fresh air does everyone a little good.
Run diswashers and washing machines at off peak hours. I believe this is from about 2 pm -8 pm. It’s somewhere around there anyways, depending on your location.

Help do your part, be nice to our Earth and make small changes this month!

Tonka Chuck & Friends, Big Air Dare DVD + Giveaway

Chuck & Friends
Our house is all boys. Well, except me anyways, but that’s a given. If you looked into our toy closet, you would see trains, trucks, dinosaurs, super heroes and everything boy. Interestingly enough, one of the first trucks we ever got Chandler was a Tonka Chuck and Friends pack when he was toddler age, about 4 years ago. They are great for little chubby hands, soft and very durable. I’d know since we’ve had them for 4 years. Since the boys were familiar with Chuck & Friends, they were all about having our own little playdate to celebrate the new movie, Big Air Dare. We got this fun pack to help us on our way.

Although our playdate consisted of just me and the boys, we had a great time with some special activities and treats before the show. Before I show you how our playdate went, here’s a brief synopsis of the movie:

This fun filled flick features a new Flip the Race Truck character that toddlers are sure to love! Watch the speed, skill and competition heat up as Chuck and Flip go wheel-to-wheel in an exciting stunt contest. The DVD includes truckloads of bonus material that toddlers will “flip” for and comes with an exclusive muddy Chuck vehicle.

We started out our little party with Chuck & Friends Board Books.

And a Chuck Sticker Book as well.

Then it was on to some tasty Chuck the truck treats. Would you believe I’ve never made Jiggler treats for the boys before?

Needless to say, they LOVED them, and I’m sure it helped that they were in the shape of trucks.

After gathering up all of the cars and trucks, it was time to settle in for the movie.

Two little sets of eyes were glued to the TV, and they really liked it!

Chuck & Friends Big Air Dare is suitable for children ages 12 months and up, has a running time of 44 minutes and bonus features as well.  The DVD also comes with a little vehicle, a nice plus!

Price: $9.99

Spring Cleaning With Clorox ToiletWand + Giveaway

Spring Cleaning
Spring is one of my favorite times of the year. It’s starting to get warm and new life is all around when you go outside. It’s also a time for cleaning though. Spring Cleaning to be exact. There’s a lot that needs to be done around our home when it comes to Spring Cleaning, but it seems like there’s even more when you have small children. They aren’t old enough to really help, so the brunt of the work falls on me. Luckily, my hubby is pretty good about helping out, but there’s one thing that he won’t touch – the bathrooms. The bathrooms have always been my responsibility, and while they can be daunting, there are a couple of tips that I want to give to help them go more smoothly.

1) Invest in a Clorox ToiletWand. I have one in each of my bathrooms, and they make toilet cleaning a snap. You know how when you use a separate cleaner and a toilet bowl brush, how you get toilet water all over the floor from the brush when you are done? No more of that with the Clorox ToiletWand. Simply attach the base to a disposable cleaning brush (wand) and then push a button to release it into the garbage when you are done. And when you aren’t using the toiletwand, it has a nice housing unit that fits nicely by your toilet. The wand kills 99.9% of germs in your toilet, so you know it’s getting the job done.

Spring Cleaning Clorox Toilet Wand

2) Keep disinfecting wipes handy at all times. My sister actually gave me this idea, and I know my mom does it as well. I keep Clorox Disinfecting Wipes in each of my bathrooms. While I am bathing the boys, or brushing my teeth, I’ll take a disinfecting wipe and wipe down the sink, counters, cupboards, baseboards, floor – whatever looks dirty. It cuts down on my Spring Cleaning time in the bathroom as I don’t have as much to clean. Plus, you can easily dispose of the wipe when done.

Clorox Wipes

Another tip outside of the bathroom that I have:
Don’t try to do it all at once. I personally get overwhelmed if I think about cleaning the entire house in a day. Instead I choose 1 or 2 rooms a day, and give myself a full week to really get the cleaning done.

$3 Off Coupon
For a limited time, you can get a Clorox ToiletWand Coupon for $3 off to help with your Spring Cleaning!  I’ve seen these at retailers near me, so check your local retailer for them!

Summer Travel Accessories for Kids From Aurora + Giveaway

Traveling With Kids
Have you ever glanced back while riding in the car and noticed that your child has fallen asleep, with their head slumped forward, or with it bobbing back and forth? This has happened to the boys a LOT. If hubby is driving, I will try to push their head back so that it rests against the side of their car seats. Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn’t. I’ve also mentioned to my husband on more than one occasion that we should probably get the boys neck pillows for when we travel. I know I like to have one for car and airplane rides, so why shouldn’t they? Aurora is coming out with a fun summer line just for travel to celebrate their 30th anniversary. The line, Are We There Yet?, consists of Cheeky and his jungle buddies as plush, backpacks, neck rests and even My Name Is ID tags.

Travel Kid's ID Tags Aurora

The line will be available later this year, but I wanted to give you a sneak peek at some of the adorable neck rests.

One thing that I really like about these neck rests is that they are small enough to fit under a child’s neck. They have the right amount of bulk to them, and are recommended for kids ages 18 months and up. Both 3 year old Rowan and 5 year old Chandler loved these!

Neck Rest Pillow For Kids
The plush is super soft, which I expected as we own some other Aurora plush. It’s definitely something that you want to lay your head on to go to sleep. The boys also loved that they were Gerome the Giraffe and Cheeky Charlie the monkey. They not only work as a great neck rest, but double has a cuddly stuffed animal, and a toy to play with while traveling. It’s nice that it serves more purposes that one. We will keep them in our car and use them throughout the summer.  They will retail for $13, which makes them reasonably priced as well.

I mentioned above that Aurora will also have backpacks and ID tags available in the fun lovable characters as well.  I can’t wait for them to come out so that we can add to our adorable travel collection for the boys.

Cisco Valet Wireless Router – Review & Giveaway

Connecting Online
Sometimes I feel like I live online. It’s really hard for me to be disconnected, and being online helps me feel connected to friends, family, other bloggers, readers and so forth. I’m sure a lot of you feel this way as well. Do you remember the days when dial up internet was the norm? I remember being in Jr. High and having to connect via our phone line. It would usually take a few minutes to load my e-mail, and other websites were sometimes even slower. I hate to admit it, but I’m pretty impatient when it comes to the internet now. Fast internet is great, but wireless is the topping on the cake when it comes to access. That’s why I was really excited to try out the Valet router by Cisco.

Wireless Router

About the Valet
The Valet router gives you wireless freedom to be anywhere in your home and get internet access. Without being plugged into an ethernet cable, you really have the chance to roam.
Wireless freedom means you can:

  • Surf the Internet
  • Print Wirelessly
  • Play Online Games
  • Stream Your Favorite Movies
  • Share Your Music
  • Upload Videos

My Experience
The Valet is incredibly easy to set up. And when I say easy, if I can do it, anyone can do it. It comes with a usb drive that includes your software and the router. All you have to do is plug in the usb setup key, plugin and connect your router, and the valet will set itself up in just a few minutes.

While setting up, you have the option to connect other computers or devices to your valet, allow guests to connect to the internet, set parental controls (definite plus!), and personalize your name, password and other settings. The process is very simple and our speeds were great once set up.  It’s wireless-N, and has a 4 port ethernet switch.  The router is also very thin and lightweight. We have ours set up in our utitility/storage room downstairs. It fits nicely on a shelf above our washer and gives us access on on 3 floors of our home.

Nice, right? Overall, it’s a great router, and to top it off, you have 24/7 support. It’s made by a company that you can trust with is also an added plus.

The Little Engine That Could, On DVD Now! + Giveaway

The Little Engine That Could DVD
The Little Engine That Could is a classic story. One that I grew up with and has been around for a long time. I was definitely excited to find out that this classic story was made into an animated movie that just came out on March 22nd. That means it’s available now!

Animated DVD

More about the DVD:

“I think I can, I think I can…” The timeless story comes to life in this all-new, feature-length film filled with fun and adventure! When Little Engine (Alyson Stoner, Cheaper by the Dozen) must leave Dreamland to deliver toys into the real world, she sets her fears aside and learns that with a little determination and courage, anything is possible. Featuring an all-star cast, including Whoopi Goldberg (The View), Jamie Lee Curtis (Freaky Friday), Corbin Bleu (High School Musical) and Brenda Song (The Suite Life of Zack and Cody), this “fun family film” (Francine Brokaw, Los Angeles Family Magazine) is one you’ll enjoy again and again.

Check out the preview below to see more about what the movie’s all about:

This was definitely a fun and cute show for my boys to watch. Because we all should have a little bit more compassion on others and never stop trying. It was fun to hear voices that were familiar to me and see what a great job that was on on this animated film. It will be a fantastic classic for us to have.

When you buy this special animated film on DVD, up to 50 cents per DVD will be donated to the Starlight Kid’s Foundation. Also, buy the DVD and receive a “Kids Ride Free” AMTRAK coupon. Coupons valid from when booking your travel from March 22 – September 15, 2011 for travel October 1, 2011 – February 29, 2012 (restrictions and black-out dates apply).

Chuggington Wooden Railway Set Review + Giveaway

Chuggington Wooden Railway Set
My little train fanatics have had a lot of different railways. However, we’ve never had a wooden one. They’ve played with them at friend’s houses, in the store, etc – but all of our tracks have always been plastic. Chuggington just came out with a fantastic wooden railway, and I’m wondering why we haven’t had one before. And the fact that it’s Chuggington, need I say more? When your children start shouting things like, “Hurray for Koko and Brewster,” I don’t have to wonder if they like the toy. And then the time that they spend laying by the side of it pushing the trains up and down, up and down, playing, pretending. Just awesome. Enough of my mom sentiments, you want to know more about the train, right?

The Chuggington Wooden Railway Features a series of dynamic, brightly colored engines and starter train sets all constructed with classic, high-quality wood. In addition to engines and complete sets, the hallmarks of the Chuggington Wooden Railway include the modular “2-in-1″ building and tunnels, which encourage kids to construct and re-shape their Chugginton world with simple, reconfigurable designs.

The new set includes items like the Chuggington Wooden Railway Double-Decker Roundhouse, Chuggington Wooden Railway Over & Under Starter Set, Chuggington Wooden Railway Track Pack, and Chuggington Wooden Railway Elevated Track Pack – which we received.

Testing It Out
Before we get started, I have a confession. I’m horrible at putting train tracks together. I can make a circular track, something that takes no creative thinking. That’s the Science mind in me. I have to have instructions to put their other railways together. Hubby on the other hand gets extremely creative and had the boy’s set up in no time.

Chuggington Double Decker
The boys loved the Double-Decker Roundhouse and the fact that there is an elevating turntable that spins. You can stack the two pieces on top of each other, or put them side by side. Trains can go in and out of their stalls as well.

Koko Brewster

The next part was the over and under starter set which hubby set up in connection to the Double-Decker Roundhouse. It features 25 pieces, a 2-in-1 clock, Wilson and Koko trains, Vee, and a figure-8 track layout. What makes this wooden set really nice is the fact that it is compatible with all other wooden train systems. That means you could use it as an addon to another wooden set if you had it. Smart thinking on their part. It’s also easy for Rowan to take apart and put together. The other pieces to other railways can be a bit tricky for a 2 or 3 year old, but the wooden ones are much easier to connect together.
It’s also extremely durable and can withstand a lot. Just watch for flying track if kids get upset. That hurts. ;)

One thing that I would recommend is that the Double-Decker house came with a train or two. I think it would be a nice bonus. I’m thinking we are going to go get a few more trains for this set as there were only 2 that came with the over and under starter set.

Overall, Chuggington has hit the nail on the head again – this railway is tons of fun in classic form, with characters that kids love.
